113.0. "Tonya or Nancy?" by GLDOA::KATZ (Follow your conscience) Mon Feb 21 1994 19:38

After all that has been said and done who would be more fun
on a date, Tonya Harding or Nancy Kerrigan? The bad boy
    in me says Tonya. ;)

Personally, I don't find Tonya to be the least bit attractive. As I normally
choose to date women based on attraction (at some level) as a first criteria,
that would put her out of the picture for me. Nancy, on the other hand, I
find very attractive.

Tonya's looks to me? Beady eyes, ski-jump nose, sick smile, etc.

I'll have to go along with Jack as well. I've yet to see or hear

looks don't do a thing for me.

No, Tonya does not have a contract with Playboy, at least according to
articles I've read. (It seems this sort of rumor pops up just about every time
some young woman becomes newsworthy.)

But I agree, I consider Nancy far more attractive, especially when it comes
to personality. Of course, I don't know either of them personally so all I
have to go on is the filtered view I get through newspapers and magazines.

    Nancy is a LADY...
I refuse to say what Tonia is... but you can get the idea.

Tonia needs money and stops at nothing to achieve her wish, it doesn't
matter what; lies, posing nude, or putting her opponent "out of the
race" by means of attacking Nancy... you all know how much the
attackers were paid and all that "baloney"... you all know that she
sued the skating federation for a "few" millions... you know it all.
that she could be a good date? I don't doubt it (if you don't mind
being cheated sooner or later) but as I said, she's no lady (in my
    view)...

I'm not saying I like Tonya but everyone is innocent until PROVEN
guilty. She withdrew the suit when the association said she could
    skate.

I think the media is putting to much spotlight on Tonya and Nancy which
is unfair to the rest of the competitors.

How does lieing get her money?

Has she gotten any money from poseing nude? There was an offer made perhaps,
but that is not the same thiung as getting.

>or putting her opponent "out of the

About the only 'evidence' of her involvement is her claim to have known after
the fact.

"Sueing" and "winning the suit" are two very different things. Again, she
did NOT get any money out of that suit. It was dropped, was it not?

Many people through the ages have cheated and been cheated upon.

Many more have judged the other participants guilty. Didn'y only one actually

This is something I agree with. I am not sure as to how much is actually
'power' on the aprt of the media vs. the lack of thinking on people's part.

"power" here to me implies something that overrides one's better judgement; I
think it much more likely that people do not make such a judgement in the
first place and hence take anything given to them. Like this reply :-) ;-)?

Sorry, but that is not his 'day in court' either. What is said to the
media is not the same thing as a day in court. This is why she should
have HER day in court, since her admissions (such as they were) were to
the media.

My daughter was just saying on Sunday that she thinks Tonya is "scanky
looking" and I agree. :-) (Is "scanky" a word? not sure) :-)

If I were a single man I'd date Nancy in a minute, but you wouldn't be
able to get me near Tonya Harding. It's almost funny how both of these
women's personalities and appearance seem to suit the role they've been
forced into by the kneecap incident. Nancy is attractive, classy
acting, with a pleasant attitude when interviewed. Tonya just isn't in
the same league when it comes to personal appeal, and seems to have a
hard, nasty attitude. One of the main things I can't stand about Tonya
is the expression she gets on her face when she has skated well. It's
a look of triumph, but mean and nasty at the same time.

Did anyone else see the humorous comparison done of them on Boston's
Channel 4 news last night? They compared such things as hair:
"Nancy's - thick, luxuriant. Tonya's - a bed of straw, victim of too
much peroxide." Outfits: Nancy's - classy, Tonya's - thrown together
in the dark, etc, etc. It was mean, but sort've funny too.

And, speaking, as another woman, I would *much* rather have lunch with
Nancy than with Tonya. Tonya has that look about her where, if you're
another woman, you just know she's going to be a bitch, whereas Nancy
just looks like a nice person.

George, I think you misunderstand the way these things work. Tonya very
likely did not hire or pay the bodyguard; her husband handled the expenses.

While Tonya hasn't had her day in court over the assault business,
there is most certainly the matter of her lack of sportsmanship (sorry
should that be sportswomanship ?). This is amateur competition, and
sportsmanship is one of the primary aspects of the whole affair. Her
behaviour prior to the decision to have her appear before the USOC
committee was of dubious sportsmanship, even discounting the attack.

The fact that Tonya then threatened the USOC with a lawsuit to prevent
her from being removed was the final straw in terms of poor
sportsmanship. Whether she is guilty in terms of anything directly
related to the attack doesn't matter ... she shouldn't be skating
    for sheer poor sportsmanship.

Nancy has, very correctly, said virtually nothing about Tonya. That
    is good sportsmanship.

Tonya has said many times she wants to win the Gold for herself. Note
NOT for her COUNTRY but for herself. Sounds very selfish to me.

Makes the question in the basenote very easy to answer.

Individual achievement is what the Olympics have always been
about. The medal count, by country, was instituted for political
purposes to somehow prove "we" were better than "them".

Frankly, I see nothing wrong with what she said. In fact, I
believe that most of the athletes want to win for personal
reasons but are unwilling to say so in the press and choose the
"win for my country" line. Sure, and those millions of $$$ in
endorsements are just a nice side benefit eh?

News today says Nancy has signed promotional contracts with Disney
and Nike (Nike ice skates?) as well as Campbels Soups regardless
of how she does in he Olympics. Tanya is not likely to get any
"endorsement" money even if she wins the Gold.

In interview with Tanya, Connie Chung asked the question "Where are
you going after the Olympics. Maybe....Club Med?" Tanya's response,
"I'm done with this", took off her mike', and left. Whatever else
I think of Tanya, I have to applaud her for that. That was one of
the tackiest moves by a reporter since "how about a hug".

Something's wrong here. Nancy has existing operative contracts with
Campbells and Reebok. Nike was going to fund Tonya's legal aid up to
$25K. I doubt that Nike or Nancy are interested in any sort of
business relationship together.
