112.0. "playboy memorabilia" by HDLITE::DITOMMASO (psychoderelict) Wed Feb 16 1994 15:11

I'm somewhat new to this conference, so I hope this note is within
the boundries of whats acceptable! (as in, can we talk about playboy!)

Here's the situation - I seem to have inherited a set of old playboy
 magazines.

Most are still in their original wrappers (plain green paper wrappers).

All are in mint condition. I have probably 20 or so from the early or
mid 50's. (starting from the 3rd anniversary edition and on) - then
probably a 4 or 5 years worth from the 60's, and finally a bunch of years
 worth from the early 70's.

I am wondering if anyone knows what these might be worth? Does anyone
collect these. I glanced through a handful of them - Boy how times have
changed!!!! The ones from the 50's contain usually only 1 or 2 pictures
of a semi nude woman!! I think even one of the centerfolds was of a completely
clothed woman! Time's definetly have changed!

I think there are also a number of magazines with some famous people posing
also. I'm pretty sure the one with Barbi Benton is in the collection.

Well, if anyone has any clue as to value of these, drop me a line,
 or write it here!

If they are not worth some large amount of money, I will keep them, - they
are definetly very interesting to read!!! I'm trying not to open and read
them though until I decide if I'm going to keep them or not.

Some weeks ago I got a catalog in the mail from Playboy (don't ask
me how I got on their mailing list; I haven't subscribed in over ten
years), and it offered (among other things) back issues of the
magazine back to the 60s. Some of them were pretty pricey ($10-$50).
Check a recent issue to see if they advertise there as well.

There are used magazine stores, though the ones I've seen were in
New York City, that sell back issues to collecters. Most of what
you have is probably worth 2-3 times the cover price at least. You
could look out one of these stores and get an estimate.

BTW, Barbi Benton was in several issues while she was Heff's girl
    friend.

I recently got a mailing from Playboy about a software product.
Tracked it down their use of Insight Direct/Hard Drives mailing list.

Thanks for the info folks ...

I forget what the cover price on these issues are, .. but I'ld have to say
you can't buy a new playboy for 3 times the cover price .. its something
like 10 times now!!! (they were 50 cents I think, maybe even less!!!) ;^)

I've seen mention of magazines back to the 60's available through playboy,
.. they defiently are kinda pricey ... I've never seen magazines from the
 50's available though! I bet they're worth a few $$

Well if anyone knows the name of a good magazine store that buys/sells old
playboys, .. drop me a note!!

thanks

p.s. - I'll have to look at some of the real old ones and see if there's
        any other famous people posing!
112.5Grafton Flea Market sourceROYALT::ELMANBELIEVE ITWed Mar 23 1994 13:117
If you're in the right area of Massachusetts, the Grafton Flea Market
which is every Sunday, year round (indoor and outdoor "vendors") has
a fellow that has set up for years, outside. I've noticed in my
browsing that he always has a section with old Playboys and Penthouse
mags, wrapped in plastic to protect from too much handling. Perhaps
you could get a good sense of pricing from him.
    Just a possibility.
