554.0. "Quakers (Society of Friends)" by VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER () Fri Jan 25 1991 08:38

I moved this here, so that folks who want to talk about Quakers (there's
a whole notesfile on that subject...) can do it here and note
551 can get back to "men without friends".

    E Grace...

I know this is ratholing this subject a little, but....

Could you tell me the difference (or affiliation, or relation) between
Quakers and Shakers? This has always confused me!

I caught the end of beautiful documentary about Shakers a few weeks
ago - sadly though I missed the beginning which told of their roots
and their founders. I was so impressed with some of their principles.
I've always felt welcomed and comfortable with Quakers also, and I
wondered if the simplicity and warmth of the two communities meant that
they came from the same root....

Or maybe you should just point me to the QUAKER conference!

Gladly, 'gail. Unfortunately, I don't know as much as I should about
the Shakers. I do know that at one time they were called "The Shaking
Quakers". They were started by a woman whose name, I am ashamed to
say, I don't remember. They practiced celibacy and equality, and did a
great deal of work with orphans. Their motto was "Hands to work,
    hearts to God."

If you don't mind waiting until after the weekend, I will be able to
    give you some more information.

Entirely different religous groups - Quakers (Society of Friends), Wm
Penn, pacifist, egalitarian (no separate clergy) and democratic, etc.
Still a very important Christian sect.

Shakers, as noted, grew only by recruitment as they practiced celibacy
and completely communal living. Mostly upstate NY and NE? Virtually
    gone now.

Others no doubt will expand on this thumbnail sketch.

I'd suggest this discussion be taken to the QUAKERS conference.
