464.0. "Eelskin Wallets and Credit Cards??" by KYOA::NEWMAN () Wed Jun 20 1990 09:38

I don't know which notes file (if any) which would be more appropriate
to ask this question, but here goes. Does anyone have any experience
with Eelskin wallets? I got one as a gift, but I have heard that they
demagnetize the magnetic strip on your credit and bank cards. Is this
true or just an old wives tale.

I don't want to try it until I know.

    thanks and regards,

    Dave

I have heard this too. I suspect it is true, but can't confirm it.

i saw this on a show... 20/20 or 60 minutes or chronicle or something
    along those lines ..

the bottom line was that the eelskin did not demagnetize the
strip on the cards, but that the wallets that had magnets to
    	close them demagnetized the strip...

they stated that as long as the closure piece did not contain
a magnet that they were safe to use

but i don't own one, but a friend of mine did and she kept all
her credit cards in this wallet and nothing happened to them..

Well, I'm going on my second year with my eel-skin wallet and so far
no credit/bank card magnetic strip problems. Maybe the wallet needs to be
made from electric eel skin. :-)

Why don't you give all your credit cards to me and I'll take good care
    of them for you...

I had a bit of trouble with the finish of the wallet sticking
to the area of the mag strip. made the card unreadable.
I now place the cards (bout 8) between my library cards.
They don't have the mag strip. for what it's worth.....

        This is great...
The bio-electric potential in SOME eels should not be active after the
eel is killed and the exchange of potassium and sodium ions stops.

why not merely place your card into one of those little
fiber-impregnated envelopes made for the purpose. the envelope
protects the whole card from most kinds of physical damage, and
provides sufficiend space (space in this context = high dielectric
constant) to protect the card from all but REALLY strong magnetic
disturbance. also electrostatic protection is provided.

additionally, these little envelopes are printed with neat info...like
how much a 15% tip is for given amounts...

    just a thought.

Yeah, too bad, for such leather would be great for gift wallets
    shoes, and other applications....

And just another tip from one who learned the hard way.....

Don't keep cards back to back.
The two magnetic strips seem to wipe each other out.

I gave up using plastic now my cash is wearing a hole in my cordura wallet
and it feels mavalus simply mavalus. I can now buy cash what I want because
now I have cash because i diden't have to pay the credit card account which
started the whole damned loop in the first place .
