405.4 | It Was On Again | FDCV01::ROSS | | Thu Mar 15 1990 09:44 | 8 |
| Too late now (unless) WGBX - Channel 44 - in Boston repeats it, but
Channel 2 aired "A Gathering of Men" either last night, or the night
before.
I didn't know until I was skimming through my TV Guide, after the
fact.

| A friend of mine went to Robert Bly's seminar in Boston; my friend
was mightily impressed. He got a lot out of it.
I saw "A Gathering of Men" when it was on. One thing that particularly
caught my attention was the remarks about mentors; how in more
"primitive" (according to whose standards?) tribes, boys are taught
what it means to be a man by a mentor; an uncle, or other adult,
and the meaning of "manhood" is reasonably well-defined by the
tribe. The mentor can't be your father, by the way. (Do I have
that right?)
We don't have that in our culture, generally, and I think it's a
serious lack. About the best we can do, generally, are people like
scout leaders, sports figures,...and, unfortunately, in inner cities,
dope dealers, pimps, and other nefarious characters.

405.7 | info on Bly tapes/books/etc | VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER | | Wed May 23 1990 10:35 | 29 |
| Books, videotapes and cassettes of Robert Bly's work
(and others in the mythopoetic men's work) can be obtained
from Ally Press, 524 Orleans Street, Saint Paul, MN 55107.
For $1.00 they will send you the complete catalogue of what
they sell and a schedule of Bly's, Michael Meade's and
James Hillman's appearances around the country.
Bly has a new book scheduled for Fall.
There are three videotapes of him that Ally Press sells:
A Gathering of Men (with Moyers) cat. no. MF30 $39.95 (90 mins)
On Being A Man (with Meade) cat. no. VC10 $39.95 (60 mins)
A Man Writes to a Part of Himself cat. no. APV1 $29.95 (60 mins)
I think all three are excellent. The APV1 tape was done in 1978
by a guy named Tom McGrath who followed him around his farm in
Minnesota, to poetry readings, etc. If you like Bly and his
poetry, you'll like the APV1 tape.
The Bly/Meade tape was done by Minnesota Public Television and is
broken into about a dozen segments each dealing with a separate
male issue.
Ally Press will take a VISA or Mastercard and their 800 number is
1-800-729-3002
