389.0. "Stores Selling Loden Coats?" by HKFINN::HAGER (Jim) Tue Nov 14 1989 13:58
I need help in finding a place that sells men's Loden (or Loden-like)
coats.
I'm looking for a certain kind of man's coat that doesn't seem to be
very poular these days. When I was in college (more than a few years
back) they were quite popular. One brand that was popular was Loden,
from Germany. One store I recently visited said the coat was called a
toggle coat. The key features include the following:
- has a hood
- outer shell is made of wool-like material (like an overcoat)
- 3/4 length (like a car coat?)
- buttons are usually stubby wooden sticks (this feature isn't
important to me but helps describe the coat)
I am NOT looking for a hooded parka. I have plenty of these; I'm
looking for something with a hood that is a little dressier than a
parka.
Here's where I've looked (or called) without success:
- Jordan Marsh in Framingham & Worcester
- Filene's in Natick & Worcester
- Anderson Little in Natick & Worcester
- Wallach's in Natick & Worcester
- Adams Warehouse in Worcester
- London Fog Factory Outlets (2) in Freeport, ME., via phone (I saw
one there a few years ago)
- LL Beans catalogs
- Sears catalog
- J C Penny catalog
I live just east of Worcester but I'm willing to travel anywhere in
southeastern NE (which I'll define as Providence RI to Worcester to
Manchester NH to almost Portland ME for my purposes) to get one of
these coats.
I've been thinking that my best bet would be some shops in Boston that
cater to the college crowd. However, I don't get to Boston much. So,
if you're from the Boston-Cambridge area & have seen one of these
coats, please let me know the name and location of the store where you
saw it.
I'm trying to post this note in MENNOTES, BOSTON, MASS, and CONSUMER.
(In each of these conferences I've already done the obligatory DIR
with several related titles and came up empty.)
Thanks.
Jim

| Sounds like you are after a Duffel coat - these are available quite
readily available down here in Godzone...in a variety of sizes and colors.
Excellent coat - though I do feel a little like padington bear when
wearing one...;^)

What you are looking for can also be found in the "Lands' End"
catalogue. It is available in two types one with the wooden peg
buttons and a more expensive model with the buttons made of horn
and a much thicker wool. The later type is imported from England.
There is an 800 number for ordering the catalogue. I'll post it
here if you like.

| RE: .1 & .2
Maybe I should move to New Zealand
Other people have also told me it's called a duffel coat.
Thanks for the info on the two different coats in the Land's End
Catalog. I found their fall catalog somewhere so I have their
number. I'll call them & get more info.
Thanks for the info.
