278.0. "Ask the moderator(s)" by COMET::BERRY (Howie Mandel in a previous life.) Wed Sep 21 1988 17:42

Recently I entered a new topic. It was deleted right away. I was
told by a moderator that it had nothing to do with mennotes. How
does the moderator know this? It was my understanding that this
was "topics of interest to men." Perhaps it would have received
replies, which meant that there was some interest. Do we need the
moderators to tell us what is of interest? The moderators could
write and reply for us and make it all so easy.

I would expect the moderators to remove any OBVIOUS unrelated topics,
but if there is a question, "the tie goes to the runner" - I would
    hope they would keep it.

I don't know what the topic of the note was, but so far the moderators
    seem to be pretty fair.

I think anyone could be interested in anything.

I dated Howie Mandel in a previous life. ;-)

Anyone who is interested in what comet::berry said
may find the same note entered in rahab::soapbox.

I would suggest that anyone who does not receive what they feel
is an adequate explation for a moderator action should contact
the moderator and ask for more information. If that doesn't help,
contact a different moderator. Please don't hold a kangaroo court
    in the conference.

I saw the particular note Dwight is referring to, and agreed with
the action of the other co-moderator who returned it. I also
happened to return the same note from HUMAN_RELATIONS for
    different reasons.

I too saw the note and have been wondering why the note
    was deleted.

I was the co-moderator that deleted the note. I sent a reasonably good
explanation of why I deleted the note to the author. If anyone
questions why I deleted the note, I suggest you send the author (or me)
some MAIL and ask for a copy of the message I sent.

I also don't want a kangaroo court held in this conference. If anybody
feels that the moderators within this conference do not act in a fair
and reasonable fashion, we encourage you to send MAIL to us and tell us
why. We strive to be fair and reasonable at all times, with two
caveats: (1) We won't let notes remain that might jeopardize the
existence of this conference, and (2) We won't let notes remain that
don't relate to MENNOTES. After all, there is a subject matter for
this notesfile :-) I would venture to say that these rules relate to
nearly ALL notesfiles. Consider, as an example, EASYNET_CONFERENCES.

I'd like to see this topic end here. If you question something
that we (as moderators) do, send us MAIL. If a conversation ensues
that might be of interest to the general readership, we can post
    here at that point.

    Hi Jeff:

I appreciate what you had to say in mail and here as well. I just
think that "we" noters should make the decision if the topic, whatever
it may be, is of "interest to men." Please don't decide what
is of interest to us. That would be.... fair.... would
    it not?

    Thanks, Dwight

    re: .7

This conference has a charter. You can read them in the introductory
notes to this conference. The charter of this conference has existed
since the beginning of MENNOTES, and will continue to exist. It is
expected that people that follow a notesfile also follow it's charter.

This makes sense if you think about it. LOTS of different topics might
be of interest to men, since everybody is interested in different
things. Thus, by your logic, all notes relating to, say, cars, water
sports, and skiing should be posted to this conference, since I'm sure
that some MENNOTES readers have interests in these areas. However,
there are other (more appropriate) areas for these to be posted.
Furthermore, singles party announcements should also be posted here
(after all, many of us are single); yet, there is another more
appropriate place for these sorts of things.

I'm still not convinced that your concerns (and concerns of others)
can't be addressed via MAIL. Thus, I've set this note /NOWRITE. If
anybody has any questions or issues regarding the way this file is
moderated, we welcome you to send *MAIL* to discuss the matter.
