206.2 | take vitamin e? | MPGS::MCCLURE | Why Me??? | Tue Jan 12 1988 10:29 | 10 |
| The thing is, Is he willing to look like Frankenstein's monster
while the plugs/stitches (depends on method) are healing? If
he says yes, then being bald is really bothering him. There is
a Senator (can't remember who), that had plugs done along
the front where his hair line used to be. He lets them grow
long and combs them over the bald area. My personal opinion
is it doesn't look natural and was foolish for him to do. Who
is he kidding other than himself?

It's Proxmire you were thinking about. .0 look at the results

The vitamin that is helpful is Zinc. But rubbing it on his head
won't keep him warm. Neither will 'e'. Make him sleep with the
pillow over his head.
I have the dreaded MPB and don't look forward to the day (42 years
old is 10 year away) when my spouse says, 'Why don't you use a
nightcap'? Yeah, Cointreau, that's the ticket. Instead I think
I'll try Minoxadil (spell check) and stay in Florida.

206.4 | No transplant for me. | MURPHY::NOVELLO | | Wed Jan 13 1988 09:02 | 19 |

Unless the bald spot is small, it might not be worth it. I know
two people that have hair transplants and both of them had problems
with scars. You can see lumps of hair sticking out of the scars!
Gross.
I opted for a hair piece (actually, more of a wig). It is made
with a fine mesh so that my scalp shows through at the part
and at the crown.
Some people notice it, but most don't. An over zealous woman
tried to run her fingers through my hair once and got caught
in the attachment clips. OUCH!
I bought it so I could stand in front of the men's room mirror and comb
my hair with the other fellows :-)

206.5 | Weird | SALEM::MELANSON | | Wed Jan 13 1988 12:23 | 10 |
| This is gonna sound weird - but a few weeks ago I saw a program
on the tube - Robert Vaughn host's it, he reviewed a hair growing
product from somewhere in Scandinavia, and it produced some startling
results. It was called Helsinki Product, I cant see why it's not
worth trying, sounds a lot cheaper, and a lot less pain than HT.

PS- My brother has a bald spot, I'm getting it for him, if it works
I'm glad, if it doesnt then nothing ventured nothing gained.

206.6 | hair club for men | GNUVAX::QUIRIY | Christine | Wed Jan 13 1988 13:08 | 12 |
| A friend of mine got a "strand by strand hair replacement system"
and it looks good. It's really like a "permanent" toupee that is
attached to the hair that's still growing on the head. As the natural
hair grows, the toupee gets "tighter" of course, so he has to go
back to this place every so often to have it adjusted and to have
his natural hair "cut to fit". It's sold by "The Hair Club for
Men" -- they have late-night advertising spots on TV. I remember
that they took a long time trying to get the right match for his
hair color and texture before making his "rug". It stays on in
the shower, when you go swimming, all the time.

| Just a comment - what you may have seen on TV was a paid commercial
with a paid spokesman. There are a lot of these 30 and even 60-minute
long ads on nowadays, especially in the late hours on independent TV
stations - just check the TV Guide and see.

206.10 | some first hand info | USWAV3::FAGERBERG | | Thu Jan 14 1988 16:46 | 7 |

The minoxidil does work in the majority of cases, but it is expensive,
about $90/month and only by prescription, so you may have to pay
the
doctor as well. Redkin is offering a product called VIVAREN (sp)
and claims it is as effective as minoxidil and costs $45 for about
three months usage.

Beware of quick fixes... I've heard "rumours" that once begun,
Helsinki Formula (and minoxidil) cause hair loss of ALL hair
if it is discontinued...

206.12 | minoxidil & blood pressure | GNUVAX::QUIRIY | Christine | Fri Jan 15 1988 11:01 | 13 |

Also, I don't think it's been mentioned (is it common knowledge?),
but minoxidil affects blood pressure. I guess that's what it was
used for originally, with excess hair growth being a side-effect.
It is absorbed through the skin and will still get into your blood
stream.

p.s. RE: Hair Club for Men. Just for the record, I liked my friend
just the way he was -- with his almost-bald head he looked a little
bit different from your run-of-the-mill guy. When I said his
"permanent toupee" looks good, I meant it looks natural.

Has anybody heard about or has anybody experience
with a method called the ICL process?
I've read their advertisements in US magazines which
are available in europe also.
They are recreating the hairline by attaching what they
are calling filiaments to the scalp .
The give a lifetime warrenty and I wonder if this procedure
is as good as they promise...
