92.0. "On office environs" by CEODEV::FAULKNER (personality plus) Fri Apr 10 1987 12:43

Isn't it amazing that without a name plate, article of clothing,
the actual person, or any other physical proof we can "generally"
predict the sex of person that resides in an office area?

Look around and notice all of the different office environments
that are created from post nuclear war messes (mine) to sparkling
    clean taj mahal's.....<insert_name_here> :)

since the majority of v.p. types are men then by default the men
in those responsible positions would have the cleanest offices

I haven't noticed any difference. But, then, I haven't really noticed.

At work, my office/lab is a mess, but I know right where everything
is. At home, everything is fairly picked up and I can't find anything.
I think its that at work I don't have my wife to pick up after me
and I know where *I* put something. She always tells me that something
is right where its supposed to be but *I* don't know where that
is. At work, everything is right where it should be but *I* decided
    where it should be.

Does this make any sense? %-)

At home I can never find anything even when I'm *sure* where I dropped
it because my husband is always picking up after me . . . (I can't
even put a spoon down when I'm cooking or I'll be digging it out
    of the dishwasher.)

The worse part about it is that sometimes he don't even remember
where he put the things he picking up.

92.9What I smell...WILVAX::WHITMANCAT SCRATCH FEVERSat Apr 18 1987 18:048
All I know is that when I come in to work in the morning I have to
wash everything down including the phone before I can sit down. Let
me add that they were all men working before me.

And the man in my house is a filty rotten slob. Has not cleaned
his room in over 3 years. Knows where everything is too, Ha! Once
found a check that was 6 months old.

Sometimes I am honestly afraid to know exactly what it is I'm cleaning
up. One day I went to answer the phone and almost dropped it because
the receiver was covered with something dried up. Gross!!! The only thing
that I have been able to distinguish were crumbs from what appeared
to be a brownie. My guess is that whatever it is they eat, is finger
licking good and ends up on the screen, phone, desk and of course the
keys. Doesn't bother them because they continue to work away.

The smell is bad at times too. Often smells like sour milk but
I'm not brave enough to go searching for it. We even have ants
and have to be sprayed from time to time. Maybe it doesn't bother
them because they know a woman will come in and clean up after them.
    Did I just say that??

92.13My job: elect. tech, assembler, babysitter.GENRAL::FRASHERDisguised Colorado mountain manTue Apr 21 1987 11:5231
Thanks, Jude, cleared that up for me. It reminds me of a time when
I borrowed a terminal from another tech. The keyboard had crumbs
and grease (fried chicken?) between the keys. Its pretty gross
to have to use something like that.

I have engineers who come into my office, which is in the lab,
and throw trash on the floor. They think that my office is part
of the lab and they can do whatever they want to, including going
through my drawers and cabinets for whatever they need. I have
told them several times not to throw trash on my floor but they
don't care. They are used to *someone* cleaning up after them,
be it a woman or man. I guess I'm just a low-life tech and my job
is to babysit them. I've gotten to the point that I will do better
and faster work for the engineers who respect my office. The ones
who don't respect it will get the job whenever I have time.

Have you ever noticed how people will drop trash anywhere because
"they pay someone to clean it up"? Candy wrappers on the TP
dispensers. Empty pop cans wherever they fall. Cigarette butts
on the floor. And it seems that its always men who do these things.
Maybe Jude is right, too many men are used to having a woman (wife)
to pick up after them. My female engineers are very considerate
    of my office and myself.

    Ratios:
    4 male engineers = 50% considerate
    2 female engineers = 100% considerate

I don't know what happens in the women's rest rooms.

I have read and the messages I've received from you prefer not

92.15Don't look for cleanliness in the restrooms either.NEBVAX::BELFORTENever try to out-stubborn a cat!Tue Apr 21 1987 13:3112
Let's not get into a discussion of the women's restrooms. If my
bathroom was as bad as most I have seen (here at DEC and in the
outside world), I would condemn the place, and then get permission
to firebomb it. I worked at the CXO facility for 6 1/2 yrs, LJO
for 5 months and now at MKO for 8 1/2 months, and find that all
the restrooms are the same, FILTHY! From unflushed toilets to papers
of all sorts (used and unused), all over the floors. I have gone
in and had to flush just to use the facilities, and then had to
clean out the used paper towels to use the sink. It isn't just
at DEC tho, it is in malls, stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc.....

    It's shameful!

i was refering to the mess you were describing.

92.17shudderDEBIT::RANDALLBonnie Randall SchutzmanTue Apr 21 1987 14:5219
Gee, the bathrooms and the public areas in ZKO are usually pretty clean
(if you discount the occasional spilled coffee grounds in the coffee
area and pile of old binders waiting to be picked up by the night
maintenance crew); even most offices are decent.

When I worked as a motel maid many years ago, I used to cringe when I
had to clean up a room that had been occupied by a group of women. Men
left the room a mess (Not a one of them ever left the pillow on the
bed. I never did figure that one out), but women were incredibly
filthy. Puddles of cold cream on the vanity shelf with cigarettes
stubbed out in the mess, toilet paper (sometimes used!) everywhere,
and I won't even mention the places I found used sanitary napkins.
The mind boggled trying to figure out what the stains on the towels
might be, though you knew what they looked like. (Stains on men's
towels were one of two things: blood from a shaving cut or -- but
    I don't want to get this notes file in trouble . . . )

re. 16 Ooopss, sorry. I jumped to the gun and was speaking from
past experiences. I also could not read between your lines.

The bathrooms I have been in within Dec are always clean. I've
belonged to four gyms and the locker rooms have always been clean
too. Must be a woman cleaning them up... But there is a man
that sweeps our floors and mops them and doesn't do a bad job at
    it.

> ... might not understand and take offense ...

True, there was not much to understand about "puh" and from
past experience took offense.

I don't look at everything in notes with a positive attitude,
there are just some topics I don't agree on. And I don't feel
that anybody is angry at me!!! nor am I angry with anybody
else. I "think happy!", AM happy and FEEL happy.

> ... And if yuu just ignore folks who may be seeking attention
by making replies that _could_ be taken as offensive ... 8^)

Good advice, thank you. As you might have noticed I, like
many others, have decided to go silent for a while. I have
also noticed that attention is the key word with those certain
comments.

Ignore the rude remarks? I should but tend to find rude people
irritating and have been known to express my feelings. So,
ignoring it is, seems to be the best policy.

I see the 'work' cubicles as a place to work and talk about technical
issues. The cubes where the cookies are is a place to get away
from the technical issues and discuss something of interest. Of
course, to some of you, the technical issues *are* something of
interest. I'm sorry. Its kinda like going to a party and then
    talking shop.
