What the h*ll does a Bruce Willis have to do with anything?
Should we really care about fashion relative to his topic? I don't
think so. My hairline is my hairline. It is not a refelction of
me, unless I plaster three strands across my pate, wear a toup,
etc. The only person who is truly aware of a man's hairline is
the man who has it.

I saw a show with another product that was developed out of the
Helsinki study. It is called "New Generation". Same claims,
same cost, trial period, etc... with the guarantee. It does not
grow hair, they say it uses particular chemicals to clean and
rejuvenate the hair follicles. If the follicle can be saved it
will again produce hair. Some people it does work for and some
it doesn't. I was impressed with the show and testimonies and tried
to talk a friend into giving it a try. If anyone is interested
the number for this product was 1-800-228-1300.
If its that important I'd say give it a try, you can get your money
back up to 4 mos. after purchase. 3 mo. supply, one month grace
period. Remember, they state it will not work for everyone. It
might be nice for someone to try it with the assumption that it
won't work and report findings to us later.
I am fortunate not to need their services at the present.

I wish guys who were bald could be happy with themselves the way

what kind of person he is inside that really matters.

| Thank you Steve, nice to know we're still friends (I think?)
As I recall it, 20% of all men will go bald before they turn
21, another 40% will gbald before they turn 60 and the remaining
40% will keep their hair until they die.
So if you have reached your 40's with your hair intact, the odds
are good that you won't loose it.
I put a discription of the genetic nature of the inheritance
of baldness in the other note for men just before it closed.
If anyone is inerested I'll describe it agin here. It is *not*
inherited only through the mother like color blindness and
hemophilia (bleeders disease).
My husband went bald before I met him and I really wouldn't
want him to change. I like kissing the top of his head! :-)
He asked me if he should use the medication that will soon be
available to grow his hair back and I'd really rather he didn't.
(Of course that was before I made an *ahem* mistake with the
clippers last weekend, he now looks like Kojak with a beard, which
I definitely don't like!)

Well, I guess I fall in the first 20 %. I started losing my
hair when I was 18. 7 years later, it has lost some considerably.
I use to part my hair in the middle until about 3 years ago. When
I started getting my hair cut over-the-ear, parted on the side,
and thinned out (I HAD extremely thick hair), I never realized how
much haior I had actually lost. My shower drain wouldn't close
because of the hair. Well, I know I have to live with it, but
it causes a minor psychological effect on me. I mean after all
I've been told I have a good build, nice legs, cute, BUT never
about my baldspot, or receding hair line, which has become a sensitive
issue for me.
I use the excuse:
I'm bald because the people behind me when I'm driving,
burned the back of my hair with their hi-beams 8*)....

55.23 | Balding Is *In!* | VAXUUM::DYER | Th-Th-Th-Theora? | Thu Apr 16 1987 02:56 | 33 |
| I'm telling ya, guys, check out ABC on Tuesday nights!
First ya got Bruce Willis, who's not only got a teevee show going, he's doing
Seagram's commercials and starting a musical career. And he's been teamed up
with Cybill Shepherd (and, as predicted, they "got horizontal" a few weeks
ago) - who's alright if you're into women who for years say they avoid red
meat and then suddenly say they don't trust anybody who doesn't eat ham-
burgers and then say in _Family_Circle_ that they're staying away from
red meat and then say via a Beef Industry Council press release that
they're not.
Uh, where was I? Oh, yes . . .
So Bruce and Cybill get horizontal, and then we see the debut of a show
featuring another balding guy and his computer-enhanced alter-ego (also
balding, of course). Rumor has it that both of these guys are going to
be involved in a bizarre love triangle with Amanda Pays, who, according
to _Vogue_, "exemplifies the modern woman - feminine but not dependent,
attractive but not overly 'done.'"
The surf's up, fellas. Wear your receding hairlines with pride and c-c-c-catch
the wave!
<_Jym_>
P.S.: For those of you who are unfortunate enough not to be balding, there
*is* hope. A new wonder tonic from Sweden kills your hair follicles and gives
you that hairline that will bring women - especially the exemplary modern
ones and the ones that aren't quite sure whether or not they eat red meat -
coming in droves. Or you can accept yourself as you are! Why, there are
plenty of unbalding role models setting shining examples. (Well, maybe
not *shining* examples. Chromedomes *are* better at that, after all.)
Just think about heroes like Barry Manilow and Mike Dukakis; do you see
them moping around just because they can't get their hair to fall out?

Upjohn's "hair restorer" is the antihypertensive drug minoxidil
in a topical formulation. As of today it is still not approved
for sale for use in baldness in the USA. It is approved in Canada
as Regaine (the US name will be Rogaine). In 33% of the men tested
no hair grew, in 33% very fine (villous) hair grew and the remaining
third had "satisfactory" hair growth. Nifty thing (for Upjohn)
if you stop smearing the stuff on your head your new hair falls
out. Price expected to be several hundred to a thousand dollars
per year.
American Cyanamid (Lederle Labs) has two products in the pipeline.
One is an antihypertensive prostaglandin analog in a topical
formulation. While doing the clinical trials (human testing) they
noticed that the control group rubbing the carrier formulation without
the drug into their heads were also growing hair - not as much as
the group with the drug but more than the guys who weren't using
anything.
When my back bald spot reaches my fromt bald spot, I start to save
on haircuts.

55.27 | I think it works! | BPOV09::LAMPROS | Bill Lampros | Wed Mar 16 1988 11:03 | 35 |
| I started to lose hair when I turned 19 and am now in my mid thirtys.
The bald spot on the back of my head grew from a cute 1/2 inch diameter
to about a 4 1/2 inch circle. Also my hair continually grew thin.
Sometime it bothers me and other times it doesn't. My closest friends
that like to comment on my bald spot bought me the Helsinki formula
as a joke after I mentioned the article I saw on TV.
In the mail came 2 bottles. Shampoo and conditioner. You rub a few
drops of conditioner on your head before you shower and then use
the shampoo. After showering, while your hair is still damp you
rub more conditioner in the hair. This stays with you all day. At
night just before bed you add a few drops to the "trouble spots".
The 2 bottles are supposed to last 3 months with a money back
guarentee. I felt stupid to try the stuff and my 11 year old daughter
gets the biggest kick out of me trying to grow hair. Does it work????
During the last 2 months my hair stopped falling off on the pillow
and alot less is left in the tub after a shower. Little wispy hair
strands are starting to grow where there was no growth for many
years. I see new hair. What started out to be a joke might really
work.
I do have some questions:
1. The 2 bottles last 3 months for $40. What happens if
I stop using it. Do I have to use it forever?
2. If I stop using it, what will happen to the new growth.
3. Do u-turns under the sheets, bumping the headboard with
with your head or high beams really cause bauldness.
( I always thought it was from continually falling on
my head while skiing.)

55.29 | a little biology | DANUBE::B_REINKE | where the sidewalk ends | Wed Mar 16 1988 14:28 | 18 |
| Baldness is caused by excess system testosterone. It is inherited
from either of your parents (not just your mother like 'bleeders
disease', or color blindness). It is more strongly expressed in men
than in women because men naturally produce more testosterone
than women. Something like 20% of all men go bald by 19 to 20, another
40 % by the time they are in their 60s and the remaining 40 % keep
all their hair all their lives. Being married into a family where
my husband, his brothers his father, grand father and uncles are
all bald (and it looks like our 18 year old son is starting to lose
his hair in the front) I personally think that baldheaded men are
every bit as attractive or more so than those with a full head of
hair. :-) :-) Women who inherit the baldness genes tend to have
thin hair rather than losing their hair.

and have turned darker (much like the rest of the hair) and looks
healthier. Its hard to tell whats happening to the existing hair
which bordered the bald spot. It doesn't look any better or worse.

see some hair growth but far too soon to notice any difference from

| To Bill Lampros and others who choose to fight advancing baldness,
I wish you all the success you desire but I don't understand why
you would bother. I have just enough hair for it to be a nuisance
- barbers must still be a part of my life.
I appreciate there is a stigma in our society concerning baldness
but I steadfastly refuse to give in to it. I also appreciate that
many women do not share Bonnie's opinion concerning the 'beauty'
or attractiveness of baldness (just listen to the WRKO HotLine
any Saturday morning).
Many women have given in to societal pressures that they color
their hair, shave their legs/underams, mear makeup, and do so many
other 'things' to their natural beauty. It appears a lot of men
are beginning to do the same. 'Tis sad, 'tis sad. Whose body am
I searching for if not my own. My body includes a certain amount
of hair, a certain type of complexion, a certain height, etc. As
long as I have done my best to maintain my body naturally then I
have no difficulty accepting it as it is. If I eat too much, don't
exercise sufficiently to maintain some muscle tone, etc. then I
have some work to do. But having little or no hair is of no
importance since it is the natural state for me.

The hottest selling hair-restorer in a long, long time in Asia is the
recently introduced Formula 101 Hair Restorer made in China. It
supposedly has won some invention prize in Geneva.
Anyway, it has caused quite a sensation in Singapore, with soldout
situations. The Japaneses are reported to have formed tour groups that
will go into China just to buy the stuff. Its supposed to be made with
several types of Chinese herbs (what else?), and each bottle cost a
handsome US$50. The inventor of the formula came to Singapore a while
back, and he was treated like royalty. Many people have claimed that
its the best thing they have tried.
Don't think they can break into the American market though; probably
can't pass FDA with all those Chinese medicine in it...
