| A womans menstraul cycle has always amazed me, how can the body "know"
when ~28 days have gone by (even if it varies somewhat)?
In my body, the only cycles I'm am aware of are related to heart-rate,
breathing, hunger, sex, etc. None of them are over 24 hours!
Have never noticed any "emotion" related cycles at all.

well the majority of the human race that suffers from hyperactivity
are males.. and to watch the reaction that certain sugars have on
them is every bit as drastic as any ole' PMS!
and the craving associated with eating that sugar comes in cycles..
so it must be connected with their body functions in some way!

| There are all kinds of biorythms. Some have a cycle that is daily,
others are weekly and monthly.
Males have rythms as much as females.
A serious example of this: manic depression seems to follow a 14
day cycle in both men and women.

PMS stands for "Pre-Menstrual Syndrom". It affects some women
by causing them to be emotionally "down" during the week or so
preceeding the onset of their menstrual period. This is only
a brief definition of it. For more detail, you can refer to
RAINBO::WOMANNOTES. There is a whole NOTE on it in that
conference. I hope this answers your question.

| FWIW, the Tantrists and Taoists believe that when ritual intercourse
occurs (particularly if you use one of the convoluted positions that
are supposed to stimulate the nervous system) the female energy
interacts with the nerve centre around the man's navel, helping to
convert his activated but unreleased semen into a magical substance or
esence (bindu). This whisks its way up the lalaa (feminine nervous
channel along the spine) and the rasaa (masculine channel) up to the
cakra (lotus shaped nervous ending) at the top of the head. This cakra
(the thousand-petalled lotus) opens into the Void, the eternal bliss of
nothingness, and thus the adept becomes one with the dual-sexed World
Soul.

Are you sure about the Taoists? What you describe is a reasonable description
of Tantra - though a bit simplified - but doesn't match what I know about Tao.

| re .19
Oh yes, the Taoists were heavily into sexual disciplines (no, not the
whip), believing as they did that since it was the exercise of mind and
will that lead on astray from the Path, the way back was via
disciplining the body, of which sex was obviously the most important.
So, they got off developing all sorts of sexual exercises, and, as one
book says "Since sexual intercourse was one of the main highways to
heaven there was no reason to remain silent about it". Thus it was the
Taoists who produced the world's earliest known, most detailed and most
comprehensive sex manuals.
To cut a long story short, sex increased the man's yang - provided he
didn't go and waste all that good work in a moment's pleasurable
weakness. Thus, Master Tunghsan (7th c.?) described (among other
things) a method of coitus reservatus, whereby "[he will not ejaculate
and] the semen will ascend inward on its account".
There's lots more, but the links between the Taoists and Tantrists are
beyond dispute.

I know some taoist sexual practices, but I was under the impression that the
specific belief in the magical nature of retained sperm was a Tantric dogma. Do
you have any references to support your claim that the Taoists also believe
it?
Belief in the debilitating effects of ejaculation is actually relatively
widespread, and not limited to Taoists and Tantrics. For example, Victorians
believed semen was a vital fluid, and the loss of it reduced your life force.
This belief owed nothing to either the Tantrists nor the Taoists. Can you
give me references to the Taoist - Tantric connection? It's a subject I'm
quite interested in.

The specific quote by Master Tungsan is from Tung-hsan-tzu XII. An
excellent source - if you read Latin - is Dr Robert van Gulik.
Unfortunately, even in the early sixties he felt the need to protect
the uneducated masses from such sensitive information. Try this on for
size:
"The Yellow Emperor said, 'Cum coitum perpetrate desideranti Caulis
mihi jaspius surgere nelot, utrum sollicitare eum debeo an non?' The
Dark Girl said, 'Certainly not!'" Absolutely...
For a more general (and English) introduction see 'Sex in History' by
Reay Tannahill. His bibliography is so-so.
