| I'm not a moderator of this conference, but in the conferences I
do moderate, I encourage others to contact the author directly if
something offends them. I generally refuse to be a "go-between".
However, I reserve the right as a reader myself to contact the author
of a note I find offensive. I figure if someone isn't annoyed enough
to contact the author, then they can't be very annoyed.

| Funny, just recently I started a note on this subject in
HUMAN::ETIQUETTE. Check out that discussion.
I agree, the author should be the first recourse, I think (at
least, I'd like to believe) that most people are reasonable
enough to avoid offense once they know about it, in many cases
the author doesn't realize he/she is offending anyone. In
certain cases (extremely abusive/harassing notes, for
example), it may be appropriate to go directly to the
moderator.

| As a co-moderator in this file, may I explain what has been going
on?
o Mr Faulkner entered an "offensive" note. He was not reachable by
mail as CEODEV:: did not wish to accept mail. So... the moderators
set his offending note hidden, pending resolution of that problem.
Now that it has been resolved, debate is hopefully to continue on
the merits of the said note.
o The moderators will, if an offended noter wishes, act as a
go-between. This may be to protect an offended noter from an offensive
noter. Please see 1.*
o This moderator was offended by Mr Faulkner adopting a personal
name of "moderator" and entering rude notes in this conference.
So I telephoned him in the absence of Email and this has been resolved.
Thus I would like to encourage direct action.
Everybody happy?

| I have a problem with offended noters sending mail direct;
If the alledged offender is busy doing *work* or even off-site and
not constantly monitoring mail and/or notes then it is quite possible
for the offended noter to take further offense as the lack of
reply/action.
This kind of situation can get even more out of hand if the offended
assume you have read a complaining mail before further entries are
made within the same topic.
I would recommend that if you are _really_ offended then the moderator
should set the note hidden and enter a note within the topic explaining
what has happended before any mails start flowing.
Dave.

Fully agree with that Dave. The author of the "offending" note
may not be quickly contactable for a valid reason in which case
we need a "safety valve". The moderators are the obvious choice
and we should trust them to do what is best for the MENNOTES
conference.

| I don't consider moderating dirty work. I am amazed that Mr Faulkner,
a self-professed moderator, would.
