| 27.1 | Not very realistic. | ANT::WOLOCH |  | Thu Nov 20 1986 19:57 | 9 |
| | Yes Bob,

Cosmos is more than mildly derogatory. It plays up sex assuming
that all women want to constantly hop into bed with any and every
man. The magazine gives a very unrealisitic view of sex and
relationships. The magazine does indeed exploit men, although
certainly not to the extent that some "mens" magazines exploit
women. I hope your daughter is intelligent enough to sort through
all the garbage articles and NOT accept those articles as fact.

    Dear Eagles,

Sensitive to what? I think I am more confused about the sensitive
part than the neo part. Macho men are sensitive. Is it a person's
sensitivities that define them as macho or neo-sensitive? Are there
some new things to be sensitive to that define "neo-sensitive"?
Or is "neo" a prefix like "meta" that retreads an abused word so
we can get another twenty thousand usages out of it?

COSMO women. (that does NOT mean we don't like SEX & LOVE) COSMO
articles are usually trash and most folks know it.

BUT...OK, I admit it, I do ocasionally do the quizes these mags
put out. Everybody has their dark secrets. (like reading the National
    Enquirer headlines)

    I don't want a neo-sensitive or a neanderthal, just a decent person.

Are women really all that hard to please????? Liesl

     > Are women all that hard to please ? <

Hummmm talk about a loaded question !!!! and I know Iam
letting my self in for trouble on this one.

Ans Yes and no, I find from my personal experence of
knowing (in various ways) different women, that their
needs are many times divirsifed and complex in compairison
to mens. In most cases these needs must be met by the man in
her life in order for her to be pleased.

The problems arise when these needs are inicially put aside
during the beginning stages of a relationship with the intent
to change the man around to meet them later. Lo and behold
they are sprung upon the man at the latter stage and when he
dosent or cant meet them its big problem time.

I could give a number of examples of this, but why take up the
space. We (both men an women) all have seen or have been a part
of it at one time or another.

Untill people learn and live two inportant phrases the problems
    will continue. They are ;

1 What you see is what you get (the equivilant to Popeye's
"I ams what I ams, and thats all what I ams")
2 A friend is not a person taken in or shamed
a friend is one who knows your faults and dont give a damn.

OK its open season on me now ladies :-)

| | I think _Cosmo_'s complaints about sensitive men are akin to the reactionary
complaints about self-assured women. If the authors of those stupid articles
don't like such people, that's their own problem. Me, I like variety; and
I applaud any trend that lets people be who they really are.

Does societys freedom to be who you are encourage crime? Are there too many
pressures on people to live exceptional lives?

| | I would never say that COSMO is a great mag, but it's certainly
better than Mademoiselle, Glamour, Vougue, etc. Yes, they do talk
a lot about sex, but I remember an interesting article about women
who don't like sex and why. They also paint a stronger picture
of a woman, and that there is more to a woman than worrying about
how well her eyebrows are plucked. Maybe in an effort to give the
woman more strength they have felt the need to put down men.

Take all the discussions about Picasso's "epoque ros", about
Dal's surrealism, about the preying behaviour of Carcharodon
Carcharias, about Joyce's narrative style, about the composition of the
Haley comet, about Kant's concept of the "thing", about the
consequences of the Crimean war and the Balaclava charge on
Euro-Russian diplomatic relations, about the impact of Renacentism on
Western culture...put them all together in a pot, and I'll trade it
anytime for a conversation on "why my last boyfriend was a scoundrel"
or "why all men are egoistic and immature" or "why I get hick-up from
drinking beer", for there's where you get to know a person better, where
you'll suddenly be confronted with personal views, prejudices and
misconceptions that are much more fun to talk about, for suddenly all
the intellectual parrot-playing of what you happened to read in "Arts"
or the like won't help you!
Yes, that's when the person unmasks! God bless women mags for inspiring
us with seemingly simplistic subjects! Besides, I feel it extremely
sexistic to have "women" and "men" literature, it surely helps building
    a useless bareer...
On the other side, I wouldn't recommend women to get a subscription for
"men's" magazines...God help us, it could do irreparable damage to the
picture as nice, open and intellectually-oriented individuals that
women have of us men! :-)

| | personally I think we should trash cosmo, with its pix for men and
articles for airheads; and the wm-f-buckley-rags, with their elitist
discussions of how best to raise one's eyebrows; and
playboy-and-its-clones-and-imitators, with their, ah, scintillating pix
and their pseudo-intellectual trappings; and the tabloids, with their
mass appeals to the lead-damaged among us.

We should all limit ourselves to reading Mad Magazine, and watching
reruns of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and riding the rides on the midway at
    the county fair.

| | I don't read Mad magazine anymore. Sergio Aragones has his own
comic book....Groo the Wanderer....which I follow faithfully. The
rest of the art from Mad I can live without. Well....Spy vs. Spy
was kinda funny....but I have Sergio and I am happy.

Rolling Stone? YUCK! I'll take Spin any day of the week!

but even so......i still think that Cosmo is more fun than most
other magazines put out....it even ranks up there with certain
comic books in terms of entertainment value.........
