6073.0. "The driver detected a controller error..." by DAIVC::MING () Wed Jun 04 1997 04:51

Hi there,

	My customer has a Alpha Server 1000A 5/400 and want to have a windowNT
3.51 installed. The installation goes well and the system successfully up,
all services are able to run and the network connection also good.
However, when I take a look in the event viewer, there are repeated errors.
Those errors are
	1. Event id=9 "The device \device\scsiport0 didn't response within the
	    timeout period"
	2.  Event id=11 " The driver detected a controller error on \device\
	    scsiPort0"
I don't find any of these errors, if I use NT4.0, instead.

	Any idea what should I do to solve this problem? Is it possible that
winNT 3.51's SCSI driver has a slight incompatibility with system Alpha 1000A
5/400? if yes, where can I find the driver for it?
	Thank you for your attention.

best regards,
Ming

Please provide more information about your configuration. Without
knowing what is installed on the machine, we cannot help you.

    The processor is Digital Alpha 21164 rev 5.0 with cache 2 MB.
    The memory size for the system is 384 MB, 128MB in Bank 0
    					      256MB in Bank 1.

    There are only two cards in the slots which are
    	* Digital 21140	Ethernet card, in slot 1
    	* S3 Trio 32/64	VGA, in slot 2
    and,
    	* Intel 82375 PCEB EISA bridge	embedded
    	* Digital 21050 PCI bridge	embedded
    	* Qlogic ISP1020	SCSI		embedded

    There are also 5 hard disks:
    	SCSI ID 0	RZ28D-VW
    	SCSI ID 1	RZ28D-VW
    	SCSI ID 2	RZ28D-VW
    	SCSI ID 3	RZ28D-VW
    	SCSI ID 4	CD ROM
    	SCSI ID 5	RZ28D-VW

    The system is a PDC, but there isn't any BDC or server connected to the
    domain (a new system and is installed in our office before we send it
    to the customer).

    I have an update to the problem. The NT system is known as a logical
    drive, I can't make it as a primary partition even I only plug in 1
    disk during installation and make 2 partitions from it (boot partition
    and system partition).

    The scsiPort0 problem seems to disappear if I only plug in the system
    disk. However if the problem is on hardware, how come I don't find any
    error if I install NT 4.0 with all the disks plug in. That's wierd,
    isn't it?

    Any help is appreciated.

    best regard,
    Ming

Have you tried to narrow it down to see if it is a faulty hard disk
or not? From your reply, it sounds like it might be. In addition, also
check the firmware revision on the hard disk and make sure it is running
with the latest version.

One other thing about the machine is that I don't think your memory
configuration is valid. On the 1000A, the largest size memory need
to be in the lowest bank number. The memory configuration should be
256 MB in Bank 0 and 128 MB in Bank 1.
