6054.0. "Help -- Lots of problems" by CHOWDA::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Wed May 28 1997 16:14

    Help!

Got myself into an awful mess this afternoon. I recently got a new
PC that I have been busily loading software on to: Windows NT 4.0 SP2
    with 5% C: (FAT) and 95% D: (NTFS), Internet Explorer 3.02, IBM
AntiVirus, Pathworks 32, TeamLinks 2.7, Diskkeeper Lite, Office 97
    and Winzip.

This morning we tried to load on Applix's Helpdesk product with Oracle
and that had a problem. It would just hang. It might have to do with
the fact that the fellow putting it on didn't realize I had the D:
drive and was putting it on the C:. Anyway we basically bagged that.

Since I didn't have anything better to do this afternoon I thought
I would load on SP3!! The PC kept crashing when installing that.

I got to a point where I couldn't even boot at all. At least
one file was corrupt. And of course I didn't write that down.
It was suggested to run Setup and repair to get the file back.

I tried that and used the 3 setup disks and CD. During that
process these two files were not copied correctly:

    	RICHED20.DLL and WIN32K.SYS

So now when I try to boot I get this message:

    	STOP:c000026c {Unable to Load Device Driver}
\??\D:\WINNT\system32\win32k.sys device driver could not be loaded.
    	Error Status was 0xc0000221

So basically, am I out of luck on this one and have to do the Windows
NT 4.0 installation over again? Why couldn't my PC read those files??
I was able to do the install last week. Will a re-install work from
    that CD??

Also, can someone explain what happens when you have a Service Pack on
and need to do a repair? You have the SP files on the hard drive and
    not the original ones installed...

    Appreciating any responses!!

    Thanks.

Somewhere in either the release notes for SP3 or a Microsoft
Tech Bulletin it says that one of the files on the 3 setup
disks needs to be updated to be used with SP3.

So it wasn't my copy of the CD! I kept getting the same
complaint about RICHED20.DLL (but not WIN32K.SYS for me) last
week when I "repaired" my system 4 or 5 times.

I believe that the repair process puts you back to the
version base level and you need to reapply the SP afterwards.
(This was a problem with V3.51, I seem to remember, when some
registry or file format changed as a result of one of the
        SPs.)

6054.2Setup disks need to be fixed for SP2 onward!LGP30::FLEISCHERwithout vision the people perish (DTN 381-0426 ZKO1-1)Fri May 30 1997 07:3916

Apparently this is a problem from SP2 onward (and probably
explains the complaint about the file(s)).

6054.3More problems!!CHOWDA::GLICKMANwriting from Newport,RIFri May 30 1997 12:4162
    Thanks for the input!!

I have been busily re-building my Windows NT 4.0 environment from
scratch. I installed Windows NT 4.0, IBM AntiVirus, IE 3.02, Pathworks
32(including eXcursion and PowerTerm), Avance Sound Card driver, WINZIP,
    SP2.

When the extract of the SP2 was done I got a message:

     Bad command or filename

Prior to the self extract. I removed WINZIP hoping that that was the
problem. The message was still there. But I did the install anyway
and it seemed to go fine.

I found that after I installed SP2, I tried to create an ERD and
the PC crashed at the point the format of the floppy was complete. I
re-booted and tried to just format a floppy. The blue screen was:

    *** STOP: 0X0000000A(0X0000000C,0X00000002,0X00000000,0X801116CF)
    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ***
    Address 801116CF has base at 80100000 - ntosktrnl.exe

    CPU ID: Genuine Intel 5.2 c irql:1f
    SYSVER 0Xf0000565

    This was definitely reproductible.

I took out SP2 and could format a floppy.

Then I decided to take out the Antivirus and put back in SP2 to see
if there was a conflict with the two as another person in this office
only has Windows NT 4.0and SP2 up and is able to format just fine.

In the meantime, while removing this two things I now have some
    interesting messages on boot:

    	RpcSs.exe Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point WahRemoveContextEX could not be located
in the dynamic link library W32HELP.dll

And a message that some service wasn't started and to check in the
    Event Viewer:

The NetBIOS interface service failed to start due to the following
error: The system cannot find the file specified.

The Messenger service depends on the NetBIOS Interface service which
failed to start because of the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I just tried to do the emergency repair hoping it would clean these
    things up and it didn't.

    Now what?

I realize I'm presenting lots of problems here. I hope I have made
    myself clear!

I appreciate any inputs while I am trying to get really good at Windows NT
    4.0!

You discovered a known problem: Antivirus, SP2, and floppy access.
    It's buried in here somewhere.

Strange ... it's not like you to start a new note without looking
    	for an existing note. 8^)
