6032.0. "WIndows NT 3.51 fails after installing SP5" by IRNBRU::MACKENZIE () Thu May 22 1997 09:32

Hi,

I installed Service Pack 5 on my Windows NT 3.51 machine and now cannot run
anything useful. The problem is that most programs, such as the notepad,
come up with an error

'The ordinal 644 could not be located in the dynamic link library
SHELL32.dll'

and then application error in the program.

This is urgent (not to mention very annoying). How can I recover from this -
when I attempt to reinstall the service pack it asks for the wrong CD. Can
I just reinstall SP4 (if I can find it!) ? Can I replace the offending DLL
while windows is running ?

Thanks
Dave M.

You may have some data corruption going on. Can you re-obtain the SP5
from a known good source and compare it against what you currently
    have?

SP5 was from the MS Developers Network CD (hopefully a good source).
The real problem is how to get it to reinstall. I got another CD of the Service
Pack but when I attempt to reinstall the setup continually asks for the
Windows NT Workstation 3.51 CD. If I put it in the drive it ignores me.

Is it possible to downgrade Windows NT 3.51 to SP4 ?

To downgrade, what you have to do is do a 'fix' install of 3.51
and then re-apply SP4. To do this, start an installation of 3.51.
It will find a version of NT already there and ask if you want to
fix the version there or install over the top. Then, during the
fix, it asks which files you want to replace. I do not replace
the registry file, but everything else gets replaced. That puts
me back to a 'virgin' copy of 3.51 with my apps installed. Then
	apply SP4.
