6031.0. "Will an Infotower work without an Infoserver?" by STAR::KOHN (Rich Kohn @ 381-1507) Thu May 22 1997 09:32

Using an Infotower without an Infoserver - Connected to Alphastation
    400/233.

IS THERE A WAY TO ACCESS 7 ADDITIONAL CD READERS IN THE FOLLOWING
    CONFIGURATION:

The Infotower has 7 CD's installed. The A/S has 3 SCSI devices on it's
on board SCSI adapter. The Infotower is connected to an added Adaptec
SCSI board. The Operating systems tried are NT 4.0 Workstation, and now
NT 4.0 Server. THE RESULTS ARE THE SAME WITH BOTH.

The Adaptec 2940 was "installed" using NT setup. The 1st time viewing
the devices in Control Panel - SCSI Adapters - Devices, I could see all
7 CD ROMs, with proper SCSI ID# and Unit #. (No CD's were installed at
    this time.)

BUT ... Disk Administrator and NT Explorer indicated only ONE CD Reader
was present. I inserted a CD in the top reader on the tower, and its
label was visable in disk admin. & Explorer.

BUT ... now only that top Reader was visable in Control Panel - SCSI
    Adapters - Devices.

SO ... I cycled power and installed 7 different CD's in
the Readers. Disk Admin & Explorer show only ONE Reader - the top one.
Control Panel - SCSI Adapters - Devices indicates 5 Readers are
    connected to the Adaptec 2940.

Again, is there a way to get NT 4.0 to add in the 7 additional CD's
    without using an Infoserver?

    Thanks to all who contribute!

6031.1Yes, it works just fineSTAR::DZIEDZICTony Dziedzic - DTN 381-2438Thu May 22 1997 11:5713
    Is this a newly-received Infotower?

If so, it *might* have the same configuration problem which
one I received had - one of the CD-ROM drives had its SCSI
ID set to 7, which just happens to be the default ID for most
SCSI host adapters. That confused the *heck* out of NT. Pull
the CD drives and double-check the SCSI IDs - betcha one is
    set wrong.

BTW, your configuration sounds very similar to one I have in
my office; NT system with an Adaptec 2940 and a few hard drives,
and an Adaptec 1520 with the Infotower. Works just fine once I
got past the SCSI ID issue.
6031.2Changed one reader's ID from 7 to 6.STAR::KOHNRich Kohn @ 381-1507Thu May 22 1997 13:197
One of the 7 CD readers was set for SCSI ID#7 - the adapter's ID. Made
it ID #6, and all is well!

Thanks very much for you help, Tony ... you had the key
    to complete the puzzle.
