| Can you provide a description of what TWAIN is?

| Re .1, blush... i do apologize for making the cardinal sin of assuming
too much.
First, TWAIN is not an acronym. It comes from the phrase "Where the
twain shall meet." The two things of "twain" are an image acquisition
device (e.g. scanner) and an image processing application (e.g.
Photoshop). TWAIN brings those two elements together.
As a glue, TWAIN is comprised of two software components: a data source
manager and an API. The TWAIN Data Source Manager provides an
interface to the device and the API is for the application. The TWAIN
specification describes how these two software components work together
and how they interface with their respective constituent element.
We need to have TWAIN native on Alpha Windows NT since it is the corner
stone of imaging software and hardware solutions.

Hence, the phrase "two to TWAIN"...

Would this allow the HP OfficeJet Printer Model 350 to be
properly installed on a Alpha system?
This printer includes a FAX, Copier and "SCANNER" which uses the
TWAIN interface. The printer is bundled with OmniPage Limited
Edition OCR (Optical character recognition) software. This
software does not completely install properly on Windows NT 4.0
under FX!32.
I have not been able to get the "SCANNER" portion of the printer
operational on a Alpha Personal Workstation 433a.
I also have a HP Scanjet 4C with a SCSI interface I would like
to move to an Alpha platform.

| Re .4, i am hopeful that our current work will lead to that possibility
in the near future. However, our effort alone, at this time, will not
immediately allow the HP OfficeJet 350 to work on Alpha NT if it
currently does not. Several other non-multi-function scanner devices
from HP do work on Alpha NT when controlled via their 16-bit DeskScan
software version. The ScanJet 4C should work via that arrangement.

it's been a slow TWAIN coming.

| Re .-*, it's good to see everyone enjoyed the lex on this one 8^).
I do have several extra printed copies of the TWAIN V1.6 spec. It's
a rather large Word document to pull from the TWG web page. If you'd
like to have one, please send mail to [email protected].

A customer has asked about Alpha NT support of scanners on Compuserve.
Do we have an answer for these type of questions for NT4.x?
TIA,

| Re .10, an answer along the line of .6 is what i would have given.
Today, only HP scanners are supported on Alpha NT 4.0.
