6001.0. "ULTRA II + NT V4.0 + SP2 ??" by RDGENG::ABRAM (John Abram) Tue May 13 1997 05:48

    Hi

I have a number of Ultra II laptops that I have to deliver to a
customer with WinNT V4.0 as the o/s. For historical reasons these
machines are currently running WinNT V3.51 with SP5.

I would appreciate some guidance on what is required to upgrade to NT
V4.0 (ie any special drivers or power management facilities) and where
    to locate them.

I have also seen a few notes indicating that installing NT SP2 may be
problematical and not a good idea. Is there any "official" person I can
contact to determine the exact status of SP2 on the ULTRA IIs and
whether there are special precautions/actions required in order to
    install this service pack ?

    Many thanks

    John

Re .0, according to the folks supporting the HiNote Ultra II, only NT
4.0/SP1 is supported. Installing SP2 and later (i know the current
pre-release of SP3 crashes it) at your own risks.

I am running an Ultra II with 4.0/SP2 successfully...even
dual-booting with Windows 95.

As I recall, you'd want to do things in the following sequence:

1 - Get the Digital bits for NT 4.0 from the PCBU web site at
pcbu.ako.dec.com. Expand the kits to the C drive of the
      laptop. You'll need them later!

There is even an upgrade instructions document there.

      You'll want WGHNU21K.EXE

2 - Install NT 4.0 from CD/Network and make sure you can get the
Digital support stuff (power management, MMM stuff, suspend)
      running ok.

  3 - Install SP2 and re-apply the Digital support.

I have NO idea about SP3. I'd want a good backup before trying it.

It ain't straightforward, but it works.
