5993.0. "Print problems after installing software" by EVTSG8::TOWERS () Fri May 09 1997 09:55

I seem to have a strange problem with NT4 sp2 on an Intel and trying to
print to an HP 4L printer after installing some additional VB related
    software.

Before installing some Green Tree controls, the Crystal Reports v5 upgrade
and the Crystal Reports patch the printer worked fine. Now when I try
and print I get the following message:

Error writing to LPT1: for document blah - application
The system cannot find the file specified
Do you wish to retry or cancel the job?

What exactly does this message mean and what can I do to try and fix it?
I've already tried deleting and reinstalling the printer to no avail. In
fact when I do that it fails to print a test page.

Note that this problem is not hardware related because I can dual boot
into W95 and print quite happily.

Note that one of the sw installs did something funny in that it obviously
tried to be clever and found an old version of Word 6 and changed my file
associations to point to that instead of my Office 95 stuff. Reinstalling
    Office 95 fixed that.

    Cheers,
    Brian

I've seen a similar message printing from Windows 95 from a DOS
application - when I boot to DOS it prints fine. Sounds like you may
have another example of an app with the W95 logo that doesn't deserve
    it.

The applications from which I tried printing and failed were Word and
Notepad. There obviously isn't anything wrong with them.

Does anybody know which file the system claims it can't find in this
case? Surely not the file I want to print?

    Cheers,
    Brian

I'd try re-installing the print drivers for your printer.

    in .0 I say:
    >What exactly does this message mean and what can I do to try and fix
    >it? I've already tried deleting and reinstalling the printer to no
    >avail. In fact when I do that it fails to print a test page.

I tried reinstalling NT4 and SP2. That fixed it temporarily. When I
installed TrueDBGrid (required for the VB5 project I'm working on) the
    problem came back.

There must be an easier fix than reinstalling NT4 and SP2 every time I
need to install anything else on the system

    Cheers,
    Brian
5993.5Just the drivers...RDVAX::akocstdhcp88-102.ako.dec.com::levyRun Like an AntelopeWed May 14 1997 06:4012
You misinterpreted what I wrote.

Re-installing the printer does not necessarily refresh the print
drivers.

Go to the printer properties and select the New Driver box. See if
reinstalling the driver helps.

You also might want to query Crystal Reports and Green Tree Controls
regarding the problem.

That did the trick. Many thanks.
