5931.0. "Which option??" by CHOWDA::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Thu Apr 17 1997 12:59

    I have started to install Windows NT 3.51 on a AlphaServer 4100 5/300.
    I got this message right off the bat:

    "Setup could not determine the type of computer you have, or have chosen
    to manually specify the computer type.

    Select the computer type from the following list or Select "Other" if
    you have device support disk provided by your computer manufacturer

    Digital AlphaStation 200/400 Family
    Digital AXPpci 33
    Digital Multia MultiClient Desktop
    Digital AlphaStation 600
    Digital AlphaServer 2X00 5/XXX Family
    Digital AlphaPC64
    Digital Alpha XL Family
    Other  "

    The CD I'm using is the Digital supplied Microsoft Windows NT Server
    3.51.

    Do I choose the Other option??

    Thanks.

	Yes. And you will the "OEM diskette" which has the HAL for an AS4100
	on it. Do you have the correct floppy to put in there?

If you don't have an OEM floppy handy you can get the bits from:

	http://ntnone.zso.dec.com/platforms/rawhide/aserver.html

You will need the "HAL C" bits.

5931.3More questions about thisCHOWDA::GLICKMANwriting from Newport,RIThu Apr 17 1997 15:0421
    re .1 & .2

    	Is the OEM floppy you mention this?

    	Alpha XL 300/366 Family
        AlphaStation TM 255
        AlphaServer TM 1000 5/xxx,
        1000A, 2X00, 2100A and 4100
        Hardware Support Disk for Microsoft WindowsNT TM 3.51

    Does the install ask for this floppy or must I do something else with
    it?

    Did I miss this in the documentation that came with the 4100?

    And my next question: can the customer go to any store and purchase
    Windows NT Server 4.0 (either new or upgrade) software and use on the
    AlphaServer 4100 as long as I have this floppy (which I also have for
    4.0)?

    Appreciating your assistance.

    Under the install menu is a list of machines. The bottom choice is

       "Other"

    Select other, supply the floppy and off you go.

    4.0 does not require this floppy for the 4100.

    If you run 4.0 on the 4100, please get the post service pack 2 hotfix
    off the Microsoft web site and apply.

5931.5Still more questionsCHOWDA::GLICKMANwriting from Newport,RIFri Apr 18 1997 07:0327

    I'm still not clear on a couple of things.

    My customer ordered and received QB-4FAAA-SA Alpha Systems Update Kit
    for Windows NT. In this kit there is the floppy as I mentioned in .0
    for 3.51 and another like this:

    Personal Workstation 433a, 500a
    AlphaStation TM 600A,
    AlphaServer TM 600A,
    AlphaServer TM 800, 1000 5/xxx,
    1000A 5/xxx, 2x00, 2100A,
    and 4100 5/xxx
    Hardware Support Disk for Microsoft Windows NT TM 4.0

    Are you saying in .-1 that I don't need this floppy for the 4100 for
    the 4.0 installation?

    In the kit is a floppy for the Alpha Hot Fix Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    SP2. Isn't this the post service pack 2 hotfix you describe in .-1?

    And finally for the procurement of Windows NT 4.0 for the AlphaServer
    4100 can the customer go to any store and purchase Windows NT Server 4.0
    (either new or upgrade) software and use it on AlphaServer 4100?

    Appreciating your assistance.

re: NT4.0 CDs

	You can use any NT 4.0 CD for installing NT on Alpha. Microsoft
	releases for NT platforms are are all on the same CD.

re: the update kit from Digital

	I haven't seen the particular one that you mention, but in general,
	the update kits do contain all the latest fixes so that users don't
	have to pull anything off the net. The exception would be if there
	was a change in the last couple of weeks.

5931.7Hot Fix and Service Pack 2CHOWDA::GLICKMANwriting from Newport,RIWed May 07 1997 09:015
    Got Windows NT 4.0 yesterday and installed it fine. I tried to install
    the Hot Fix without applying Service Pack 2. Do I need to install the
    Service Pack 2 first??

    Thanks!

5931.9Do I really need to apply Service Pack 2?CHOWDA::GLICKMANwriting from Newport,RIWed May 07 1997 10:235
    I was told at a Windows NT User's Group meeting to apply Service Pack 2
    only if you need it. Because of the Hot Fix do I need Service Pack 2
    or do I wait until I see some reason for applying both?

    Thanks again.

    Methinks the story about SP2 has taken on a life of its own. Yes,
    there were some problems on the first release of the service pack.
    Microsoft fixed those problems. I have installed SP2 on several
    systems without *any* problems - Intel and Alpha. Do not be afraid of
    installing SP2.
