5922.0. "Complete Disaster Recovery" by ROCK::STROPPARO (Peter A. Stropparo) Wed Apr 16 1997 13:13
How does one restore after a disaster, with 4.0 SP2 workstation?
Here is my situation, last friday I installed a new DAT drive and
did a full backup of my system disk (C:), using the backup software
that comes standard with NT.
I then foolishly loaded the "fully" functional evaluation copy
of Seagate Backup Exec 6.11 onto my machine. I decided I did not
like it even though its more polished then the default backup
that comes with NT, it does not allow backups of network drives.
So I uninstalled it. Now ntbackup hangs for a minute or so
when I first start it.
OK no problem, I've got a backup. I did a complete restore including
the registery and the problem is still there. This got me to thinking
about complete disaster recovery.
Forgetting the above problem for the moment, I took a blank disk
and placed it in the machine in place of the system disk, worst case
complete loss of disk. I did a minimum NT install on the new disk
then a restore from tape. The system now crashes during boot.
The original disk was 1.2G and the test replacement was 530M but
the backup set is only ~330M. Other than the disk swap everything
is identical to before. I did have to move the paging file to
another disk before I did the restore.
Any thoughts/suggestions on either problem will be welcome.
thanks
peter
