5912.0. "personal workstation vga problem" by COLA1::ESG040::KIY () Tue Apr 15 1997 08:45

Hi,

we have a strange problem here with a Personal Workstation 200i.
Customer wants to have NT 3.51 on the system. Installation works
ok, but as soon, as we try to logon, the system freeze...no mouse
movement possible, only power on/off helps.

we can work with the system if we use [vga mode] at startup.
(the nt logo is white not grey as the standart startup)

The Graphic Card is a DECpc S3 Vision 864. We tried to find
any updated drivers without success...

anybody else seen this problem and can help?

sp5 doesn't help.....

Regards
Harald

Why not just install the standard S3 drivers that come with
	Windows NT 3.51?

If you're running an Adaptec 2940 SCSI (which is probably the case),
I think there was an updated AIC78xx.SYS driver for Win NT V3.51.
Without it, it crashes with the default AIC78xx.SYS.

Now, where to get it? It might be on the PCBU web site somewhere.

I don't see why it (aic78xx.sys) would be on the PCBU web site. If it
has been updated, it should be available from a service pack from
Microsoft. Service packs are on the IBG web site in ZKO and on the ftp
    mirrored area on ntnone.zso.dec.com.

Well, I didn't know whether it had something to with the special
DEC-approved BIOS (V1.22S) we originally used in the 2940W, in which
case it would be our problem (not Microsoft's), and it would make
sense to be on our web site.

Ok, I understand. I don't recall anything like that coming through our
    file submission process.

my original problem hasn't anything to do with
the SCSI Controller cause the system disk is
an IDE-Drive.

What we found out so far is, that the problem is
the vga-Adapter PCXAG-AL. It has a chip on it
saying that it is revision 1.00. (D02). This seems
to be a little bit out of date, although we've got
a new adapter from logistic with the same revision.

As we found out it should be 1.02 (E02). So now we
will try to get a new board. Customer says, that he
knows about that problem with this special VGA adapter
and has seen this problem very often. (freezing NT)
Even with NT 4.0
