A customer with a new HX6000 is trying to load NT4.0 using Quick launch. The HX has 4 x 4Gb drives running off the internal controller. After the first copy of files and reboot sequence, the system hangs with the processor banner on the blue screen. A power off recycle is required to recover the system. The customer was advised by an MCS engineer that this was an NT problem and the work around was to remove one disk, load the O/S and then refit the removed disk. This worked but the customer is confused as to why this is so. They are trialling this system to replace a couple of NECs which have not exhibited the same problem. Can any one confirm/deny the NT bug story, or explain why this happened? Ron Powell.

Just a guess but its probably due to the virus check NT does on all disks while its installing NT. If there is not a FAT or NTFS partition seen on all disk drives NT in Version 3.5 would blue screen with a Virus Bugcheck. In later versions of NT it just has a bunch on numbers like 0x4, 0, 0, 0 instead of the virus message. Bill Possibly other vendors put a FAT partition on the other disk drives. |
