Hi,
Hope someone can help with this one ...
Prioris XL 5200
Sony SDT 7000 tape drive (= TLZ09?) - internal drive
Windows NT 4.0-SP2 Server (no Hotfixes)
Backup Exec 6.11, build 184
Sony SDT 7000 tape driver for NT/Intel
Backup Exec fails intermittently, that is; it almost always fails (9
out of 10 times ....) but not always at same stage of backup. Fails
both when backing up with HW or SW compression. Backup without
compression enabled completes, no problem!
Error message in Event Viewer:
-> Source: Backup Exec 6.11. The device \device\tape0 has a bad block
-> (in backup log file "Bad data, tape ... has a bad block).
I have had him test Windows NT Backup, too. NT Backup succeeds with HW
compression enabled (have not tested without HW compression)!!!
The customer has also tried a couple of other things, without any
better result:
-> He set SCSI transfer rate from 10MB to 5MB
-> ---"----- Sync Negotiation from YES to NO
Questions:
---------
- Has anyone else seen this problem?
- Is it a bug in Backup Exec?
- Is there a fix?
- Should we ask the customer to change to change to some other Backup
application?
All help very much appreciated!!!
Cheers,
Bjarne Christensen, CSC, Oslo :-)

First find out if it is a SDT-7000 or a DEC TLZ09. If it is a TLZ09
submit an IPMT. We are currently working on a problem that may be related.
My "GUESS" is it's a drive hardware problem.

5877.2 | Correct guess! HW problem. | OSLLAV::BJARNEC_P | The last boat left without me ..... | Mon Apr 14 1997 02:27 | 11 |
| Steve,
Thanks for replying to my note!! Spot on with your guess, b.t.w.
I was away last week, but has been informed that BackupExec (and
also later NT backup!!!) failed due to a HW problem with the tape
drive. After changing the drive both BackupExec and NT Backup
completed without an error message.
Thanks!
Bjarne :-)
