5875.0. "Rainbow Sentinel dongle problem on Windows NT v4.0 for Alpha" by RDGENG::WOOD_J ([email protected]) Fri Apr 04 1997 06:15

I have been setting up some systems for a benchmark. The application
(not Autocad, but a GIS appln) uses Rainbow Technologies' Sentinel
SuperPro dongles for product licensing on PCs.

The dongle works fine on a Digital Personal Workstation 200i (Intel
[Kauai?]) running NT v4. But the dongle isn't seen by a DPW 433a
(Alpha [miata]) also running NT v4. The application comes with Intel
and Alpha software & drivers for the dongle; I have installed the
appropriate versions on each system (i.e. I'm not using FX!32 at all).

I've seen reference to a similar problem with Autocad & Installshield
(ref. WRKSYS::XL_PERSONAL_WORKSTATION note 211.3). I tried the Autocad
patch - but this looks for an Autocad product directory, which I don't
have.

The problem has also been seen on an Alphastation 255/300 running
NT v4.0. Some older Alphastation 255s, running NT 3.51, work fine.
Thus we suspect Alpha NT v4.0 to be part of the problem.

Any ideas?

Has anyone else got Rainbow dongles working using NT v4.0 on Alpha
systems?

    TECHnet Q143126 & Q159144 describe a 4.0 problem that is fixed in Post-SP1 -
should be in SP2. check that the Alpha bits have a fix too - it may
have just been a problem with Intel. The fix was in NTVDM.EXE.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think this is my problem.
That is, there are Alpha and Intel drivers for NT for the
dongle, so I don't think the NTVDM is being used at all.

I would like to know what Autocad's problem was, and how
they fixed it. Anyone know?

Thanks,
  John
