5870.0. "How do you crash NT on purpose?" by METALX::SWANSON (Victim of Changes) Thu Apr 03 1997 15:17

    Hi,

I'm looking for a way to crash NT 4.0 at will. We need this for qual
testing so we can make sure a dump file gets created properly.

Does anybody know a way to do this? Preferably something that can
be done in C. An access violation isn't good enough, it has to
crash all the way down to the blue screen!

    Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have the resource kit installed.

Then go to the command prompt and do TLIST, find the WINLOGON
    process then KILL it.

Re .0, from an Administrator Group account, enter the "kill csrss"
command in a DOS window will crash the system.

Re .0 & .2, i guess you can do the same command from C exec("kill
    csrss") as well.

    Hi,

At one time there was less free hard disk space and the size of the pagefile
was considerable. When I started 2 or more applications, the system
crashed, created a dump to \winnt\memory.dmp and restarted.

Try manipulating the pagefile size in the 'system' icon in control
    panel.

Thanks for the quick responses! Kill winlogon seems to do the trick...

You can also crash it by playing Alanis Morisette (sp?) latest
CD, "Jagged Little Pill". I guess there are a number of things
NT just can't swallow. ;-)

I've played "Jagged Little Pill" lots of times, and nothing unusual happens.

Woe betide me if I ever put a Spice Girls CD in, though.
