5804.0. "Policies ans standalone Workstations" by NBOFS1::HAHN (Power to the Bauer) Fri Mar 14 1997 04:13

    Hi,

    a customer is using NT 4.0 standalone Workstation only as X-clients
    from VMS. The Display should not show any icons or the taskbar. I know
    that policies will do almost all the work within a domain. Is it
    possible to implement policies in standalone WS?
    I copied the Policy editor and the *.adm files over from the Server
    tools and created some policies. Where has the pol file to be placed that
    it will work on standalone WS?

    regards

    Gerhard

    The pol file should be called NTCONFIG.POL in \winntroot\SYSTEM32\REPL\

5804.2NETLOGON-Service not runningNBOFS1::HAHNPower to the BauerTue Mar 18 1997 09:087
    Jon,

    have you tested it?
    NETLOGON-Service is not running and is not used, as far as I can
    remember, on a standalone WS.

The policy editor in NT 4.0 can be used to modify the regestry. Since
you are using a stand alone system this sould do everything you need

5804.4No Netlogon, no domain connectionPGREEN::SACKMANJPedalo'ing the InternetWed Mar 19 1997 01:1813

    The problem is that NETLOGON doesn't run on WS! It only works, as far
    as I know, when logon validation is performed by a server, so your WS
    needs to be part of a domain (which, if you're standalone you won't
    be!!)
    The location of the file for NTS is correct but we need NETLOGON
    running and picking up ntconfig.pol
    I'll ask on an MSN forum if it can be done.

    What I meant to say in .4 was:

    Policies only work, as far as I know, when logon validation is
    performed by a server, so your WS needs to be part of a domain
    (which, if you're standalone you won't be!!)

5804.6it will workNBOFS1::HAHNPower to the BauerThu Mar 20 1997 08:467
    Jon,

    when sharing NETLOGON on this WS and having NTCONFIG.POL in it, it will
    work.
