There seems to be a problem when creating a shortcut on one computer and then trying to use it on another. I have multiple Alpha stations 255 that are set up with NT 4.0 SP 2. MSOffice and other aplication are all installed in the same manner. Whenever I create a short cut on one machine(1stcomputer) like the Tool Bar and then try to run this short cut on another computer(2nd computer) the shorcut refers to \\1stcomputer\F$\MSOffice\office\msoffice.exe instead of f:\MSOffice\office\msoffice.exe And of course you know that the F$ share is not accessable by normal users. Any help and/or ideas on solving this problem would be great. Turing off the F$ share seems to solve this problem but there are a lot of workstation at this site and I would like to have access to there drives from my server. Thanks for any help in advanced Very confused. Jeff Beaupre [email protected] [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

What causes the change in .1 to take place? I have this occuring on shortcuts that point to my local C drive. I create the following shortcut on workstation WBCGL3 in domain WBCDOM. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" When I try to use this shortcut from WBCGL1 in domain WBCDOM it changes the shortcut to "\\WBCGL3\c$\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" This also is the case for most of my other shortcuts. Unless I physically remove the shortcuts and recreate them they will always try to get to WBCGL3. If I look at the shortcut properties after I login to another workstation in my domain (but before I double-click on it) the path is correct. Once I execute the shortcut the path is changed to point to the workstation on which I created the shortcut. Also if a change the shortcut back to C:\ the next time I execute that shortcut it changes to \\WBCGL3\c$. Only physically deleting and recreating fixes it. I have roaming profiles setup on my domain controller WBCNT. Domain Control runs WNT4.0 server, all Workstations run WNT4.0 Workstation. Service pack 2 installed on all machines. Profiles set to \\WBCNT\Users\%USERNAME% Can someone give me a clue as to what is going on. thanks for any help, gene gooden

Try Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q158682, "Shortcuts Created Under NT 4.0 Resolve to UNC Paths". Good luck, Dave Wylie.
