5758.0. "Tape error from NT backup..." by HAN::SCHNEIDER () Mon Mar 03 1997 04:19

  Hello,

I have a problem with a TLZ07 tape device at an Alpha 1000A under NT 3.51.

I'm running a backup on from command level to that tape and this did work
for a longer time but now I'm receiving error messages and I'm not able to
decide wether the problem is the tapedrive itself or on the disk the backup
is reading from. I have implemented a log which returned:

Backup Status

Tape Name: "Tape created on 3/1/97"
Backup of "K:"
Backup set #1 on tape #1
Backup description: ""
Backup started on 3/1/97 at 1:00:04 AM.
Directory K:\
Directory K:\CITI_DMP
amdb_dmp.DAT 884984 2/25/97 9:00 PM
celldb_dmp.DAT 79030520 2/25/97 9:10 PM

The tape device reported an error on a request to write data to tape.

Error reported:
Bad data.

Backup completed on 3/1/97 at 1:02:20 AM.
Backed up 1 file in 2 directories.
Processed 2,551,194 bytes in 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

The system log says "error number 7" and "The device, \Device\Tape0, has a
bad block" about this event.

Should I test my disk drive with chkdsk, which only works with booting
or is there another possibility to check my disk?

The system is remote at my customer and running a productiv system and
I can't do too much testing and booting...

Any idea to fix this problem???

Thank you,

   Helmut

    Hi Helmut,

Has your customer tried another tape cartridge?

Has your customer cleaned the tape drive recently? Ever?

Did anyone open up the system recently add/remove devices or move
the SCSI cable in any way?

Chkdsk of your system drive can be run in read-only mode at any
time. (e.g. chkdsk c:) If there are errors, they can only be
    corrected upon reboot. (e.g. chkdsk /f c:)

    Regards,
