5697.0. "FAT-NTFS Conversion on Alpha?" by QCAV02::VARUN () Thu Feb 13 1997 23:41

    Hi,
    We are having the following config in our lab:

    AlphaStation 250;
    ARC Firmware 4.49
    Windows NT 4.0
    FAT Partition.

    When we try and use the convert command to convert the D: to NTFS,
    there pops up an error message which reads:
    "The specified Drive is the System Partition on an ARC-compliant
    system;its file system cannot be converted."

    We tried to reinstall on a raw partition as well,but with the
    same result,even though we "converted" to NTFS during the installation.

    The C: partition is a 10MB FAT.

    Any help will be welcome.

    Thanks,

    Varun

Did you use arcinst to create the partition on the machine? If so,
there is a bug in arcinst. Any partitions created by arcinst will
be marked as a system partition. To fix this problem, do the following
in the firmware:

1. At the boot menu, select Supplementary menu.
2. Select the setup menu.
3. Select Edit system environment variable.
4. Type systempartition.
5. Delete the entry that is not the system partition. In your case, it
   is the entry that has partition(2) at the end.

    A fixed arcinst is available on Digital's web pages (I forget where).
    It fits nicely on an ECU floppy :-)

    Hi Again,
    We are having trouble again...this time with ARC Version 5.12...

    Where do we edit the environment variables in this version?

    Kind of urgent!

    Sorry I forgot this:
    The machine is an AlphaStation 255/300;
    Windows NT4.0
    (and the ARC Version is 5.12)

    regards,

There isn't a supported way to modified environment variables under
AlphaBIOS as you should not need to do this.

When you use Hard Disk setup within AlphaBIOS to create partitions
on the drives, it will not marked them as system partitions unless
you do an express format and no system partitions are defined or you
explicitly mark a partition. In the case of express format, it will
marked the smaller partition as the system partition.

For a recovery, read note 5127.17.
