5662.0. "Deleting files is bad for your sanity." by KANATA::TOMKINS () Mon Feb 10 1997 08:50
I normally don't panic, but in this case I'll make an exception.
Holy Cow, Whoah, Attention, Whoops, Rat Sh_t, Aw Nuts and other more
expressive explatives.
Try this.
Windows NT V3.51 Service Pack 5.
Start a Command Prompt (aka MS-DOS Prompt).
edit t.txt and insert the text, anything, then exit.
copy t.txt to t.txtfge
notepad this_is_my_test.txt and insert the text, anything, then exit.
copy this_is_my_test.txt to this_is_my_test.txtfges
now do a dir to make sure you see these four files and that they are
really there.
Type del *.txt and watch all four files go into history land without a
blink a nod or a care.
Thanks Bill, I cannot find this behaviour documented anywhere and it
burns me up.

5662.2 | it matched on the 8.3 name! | NETCAD::ROLKE | The FDDI Genome Project | Mon Feb 10 1997 10:22 | 8 |
| Yeah. Kinda sucks, yes?
In my dealings with the DOS box I try to keep everything to 8.3 and you
don't get into a trap. I have some big .BAT jobs that work just fine
in 8.3-land that had unusual problems with big file names.

Yeah, 8.3 compatibility strikes again.
>> Thanks Bill,...
I gotta get my name changed! This Gates character is really giving us
"Bills" a bad name. ;-)
