5660.0. "KZESC, KZPSC boot support?" by ADOV01::JARMAN () Sun Feb 09 1997 17:23

I've looked here and in the NT HCL but can't find the answer to this
    simple question

    For Windows/NT 4 .....

On Alpha platforms, can disks on a KZESC (EISA RAID controller) or on a
KZPSC (PCI variant of the same) be used as boot disks? If the answer is
yes, are there any restrictions in what sort of disks they are (ie
JBOD, mirror sets, RAID5 sets etc)?

Also, if the answer is yes, the obvious next question is - is this
supported by Microsoft, is it Digital supported extra functionality or
is it a case of yes it works but nobody actually certifies that it
works and therefore nobody will support it if you have problems?

If anybody knows, I'll be happy to let the customer of mine who asked
    what the real story is

    thanks in advance

Boot support for the KZESC/KZPSC is available on most Alpha platforms.
The boot support is provided in the firmware by the inclusion of the
driver i.e. if you see SWXCR in the firmware, then boot support is
provided.

As for restrictions on the type of disk, I do not believe there are any.

Further clarification if possible please. I've done dir/tit=boot and
    dir/tit=mirror but it's not 100% clear.

Boot support on KZPSC is provided by the firmware. Does this mean I
can configure 2 disks as hardware RAID 1, use them as my NT boot disk
and in the event one of the drives failed, I could continue operating
and/or reboot from the remaining drive.

My customer is looking for hardware only solution against failure of the
    system drive.

You can hardware mirror two disks off the same KZPSC and boot.

...but I think you still have to have two boot selections because
the boot selections go to a specific hardware device. I have a
customer that did it this way.
