5641.0. "privilege error installing Matrox Millenium drivers on Kauai" by CERN::HOBBS (Congrats to the Ignoble Peace Prize winner! (http://www.eecs.ha) Tue Feb 04 1997 11:47

Subj:	privilege error installing Millenium 1597_233 drivers on Pentium Pro dual

I'm trying to install the Millenium 1597_233 driver kit on NT 4.0
on a brand new OEM system.

Running from the Administrator account I get a popup stating:

"The drivers were not successfully installed. You may
not have the privileges required to install a new driver"

This appears after all but MGA64.DLL and MGA64.SYS have been copied
and the "Display type" and "Display properties" windows are onscreen.

I can copy those files manually without any errors. There are no
messages in the event log.

I was able to install the drivers a few days ago on a different disk
on this system. I'm now rebuilding the system for production and
have been unable to get past this point. I've even tried setting
all the protections on the disk to "full access" for "everyone"
without effect (not surprising, since all file access failure
auditing is enabled).

Any ideas? I've tried with and without service pack 2, I've reset
file protections, I've tried installing from VGA mode...

Thanks in advance for any tips.

...but just to be sure I left the domain and joined a workgroup.

No difference, same failure at same point.

During the installation I made period snapshots of the system with
SCOPY so that I could backtrack a bit if (when) I screwed up.

I restored the latest one of these to a FAT partition (no security,
right?). I also did >attrib -r f:\* /s to remove all read-only marks.

-> still get error

Conclusion: Not a file protection issue - but I assumed this since I
	     wasn't getting alarms.

I also tried restoring the initial SCOPY snapshot from immediately after
installation - it fails there as well, so it's not related to the
subsequent s/w installations.

I've done "repair installation - check system files", all is OK.

Very bizarre, since I can still install the drivers from the test system
disk.

5641.3Need some solution to this problem....PERFOM::LICEA_KANEwhen it's comin' from the leftFri Feb 07 1997 09:2911
We are having the *same* problem here.

On Intel, on Alpha, with Windows NT 4.0.

Change from Matrox Millenium to generic VGA? "The drivers were not..."
Try to install PowerStorm 4DT series graphics? "The drivers were not..."

Checking newsgroups and digital notes files shows that there are
    several people having this problem.
