5625.0. "4.0 Themes cause exception" by WASHDC::MOOREK () Thu Jan 30 1997 13:57

Has anyone tried to load the Desktop Themes onto Intel/NT 4.0 using the
4.0 Resource Kit? They loaded just fine but when I run the applet
Desktop Themes in Control Panel and select a new theme it bombs with:

     An application error has occurred
and an application error log is being generated.

    	Themes.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x0100efde

The amazing thing is it works just fine on Alpha/NT 4.0.

This is a bug that Microsoft plans to supply a patch for. It's not
available, yet. It will appear on their ftp site when it's available.
(In the Resource Kit fixes directory.)

Actually there are 2 bugs: if Themes.exe bombs when it tries to
decompress the wallpaper image and you have Office 97 installed, this
is a problem with the JPEG driver, and there is a fix for that on the
Office 97 CD, look at the ValuPack Help under "Software Patches"

After I applied this patch, it worked better but I still have a
problem (bug #2): after switching to a new theme and clicking "OK" or
"Apply" you'll get an access violation. Themes has finished its job
though, so it's less annoying. It will just prevent you from
pre-viewing several themes in a row. I haven't seen a fix for that.

Hope this helps

I found the Themes obnoxious. Put it on a system where two different
users want to use different themes and the results are a collection of
    the two.

Not ready for prime time on NT, that's for sure!

Here's the symptoms, cause, and solution to the "Desktop Themes" issue.

Desktop Themes Crashes When JPEG Filter is Used----------------------------
-------------------
Symptoms:
Desktop Themes might crash (and generate a Dr. Watson log) with any of the
following symptoms:

  Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)
  Exception: access violation (Oxc0000005)
  error in themes.exe
  Desktop Themes closes without warning

Correction:
The Microsoft Windows NT Resource Kit team has developed a patch to address
this problem for all Windows NT platforms. This patch is available for free
download at the following ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/reskit/nt40/

Note: You must have the original Windows NT 4.0 Desktop Themes program
installed in order for the patch to work properly.

Cause:
Microsoft Office 97 (and possibly other programs) installs a JPEG filter
that is incompatible with the initial release of Desktop Themes included in
the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit. This incompatibility is not a problem with
Microsoft Office 97. The only complete resolution is to obtain the Desktop
Themes patch file.

Workaround:
To circumvent this issue without the patch, use the following steps:
  1. Open Desktop Themes
  2. Click the Save As button, then enter the theme named "Original
Settings.Theme" (without quotes), and then click OK to save your
     current settings as a theme

When you save or change the current theme settings, the Settings check
boxes become available. You now also have a desktop theme with a .BMP
  wallpaper.

  3. Uncheck the desktop theme wallpaper option before changing desktop
themes, and then set your theme as normal and click OK to save your
     change

  4. To change the desktop theme again, open the Desktop Themes program in
the Control Panel and then select the "Original Settings" theme. This
theme has a .BMP wallpaper and should not cause Desktop Themes to
crash. After changing the theme selection, you can once again disable
the Wallpaper checkbox before choosing a theme that has a JPEG
     wallpaper.

If you wish to use the wallpapers without the patch, use another program to
convert the appropriate .JPG file into a .BMP file, and then change the
display background setting to the new .BMP file.
