<<< WRKSYS::SYS_TOOLS:[NOTES$LIBRARY]MIKASA.NOTE;2 >>> -< AlphaServer 1000 (aka Mikasa) >- ================================================================================ Note 831.0 Alphaserver1000A disks locking up. No replies SIOG::KING 25 lines 30-JAN-1997 05:19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am having a strange problem with a rack mounted Alphaserver 1000A 4/266.It is running NT3.51 Service pack 4 and contains 3 RZ29B-VW's configured as RAID 5 in an external BA356.The controller is a single channel PCI SWXCR. Intermittently when someone attempts to logon in the morning they are unable to and the server appears to be down. When we look at the console it is OK but using file manager we are unable to access any of the local partitions C.D or F.We can access all mapped network drives on other machines but are unable to do anything locally.A reboot always clears the problem.Incremental backups are performed every evening at 19:00 and always complete successfully. It is backed up across the network using Arcserve on another machine. We initially replaced the SWXCR but have since discovered that we are unable to access the CDROM which is on the internal SCSI so we think the problem is not with the SWXCR.This problem has never been seen during the day but only in the morning so we suspect it could be connected to the backup the previous night. The machine has only been installed since October 96 and always had this problem. Any ideas or help appreciated. Tim King. PS I have cross posted this to Windows-NT.

Tim - a few suggestions .. - ensure NT 3.51 SP5 is applied - fixes numerous problems. A few post-SP5 fixes are also available. Reference: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/NT351/ussp5/ ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/NT351/ hotfixes-postSP5/ - ensure Alpha firmware is latest (4.47 I believe ..) - ensure proper scsi rules (termination, length of cable etc) are in play.
