5620.0. "NT mass installs" by BHAJEE::JAERVINEN (Ora, the Old Rural Amateur) Wed Jan 29 1997 06:39

I've found a few topics regarding this, but no real answers to my
problems. (Maybe I just didn't hit the right notes though).

I need to find something to do mass installs of Windows NT (4.0
obviously in this day and age).

Products like Ascot (www.ascot.com) and Ghost (www.ghostsoft.com) have
been mentioned. Does anyone have real practical experience with these
(not just playing around but installing hundreds/thousands of
    machines)? Any other products recommended?

The main requirement is to install NT Workstation on existing
"diskless" PCs (network installation). "Diskless" means that the PCs
_do_ have a disk, but it's currently unformatted & unpartitioned (they
run network booted Windows 3.11 on those). Ideally, this should be so
simple that a non-computer-literate user can just insert a floppy, let
it go and the rest is automagic.

I believe there is something in the Resource Kit. I didn't do it,
but my customer installed lots of NTW exactly the way you are
describing. There might have been a couple questions that couldn't
be answered in the load script, but I don't remember. It's been
	a while.

Yes, there's e.g. setupmgr.exe, but it only solves part of the problem
(Ascot mentioned in .0 utilises setupmgr additionally).

ASCOT does the whole thing, Disk partitioning formatting, installation
of NT and additional products (service packs + office etc). Also works
from a boot floppy and very easy to use.

    Bundesbank 2000 clients
    Bertelsmann 1800 clients
.....Nato, Siemens etc and numerous training facilities.

Thanks, Mark, exactly what I wanted to know...

I downloaded the document from their web site, and a trial version, but
haven't had time to try it out yet.
