re Note 5498.11 by 2903::FLEISCHER:

        Well, the volume (and volume control) came back after I
        removed the Creative Labs driver (the latest NT V4.0 -- dated
        a week ago) and installed the Sound Blaster driver that comes
        on the NT 4.0 CD!

        (I naively thought that the drivers on the NT CD were just
        older drivers from Creative, but an email exchange with a
        Microsoft NT developer convinced me that they really do roll
        their own drivers -- apparently more successfully than the
        Creative itself!)
