5479.12Crashes when formatting floppy on intel systems.MSDOA::SETZERBobby Setzer @CEOMon Jan 27 1997 05:487
After putting SP2 on 2 different systems running NT4.0 workstation,
it would crash anytime you tried to format a floppy. The third NT4.0
workstation I put SP2 on worked fine. The uninstall option has solved
my problem. I have used SP1 for a month and no more crashes. Waiting
    for SP3???

5479.13Updated Service Pack 2 kitPYRO::RONRon S. van ZuylenMon Jan 27 1997 09:4055
It seems Microsoft found a problem in the distribution related to PKZIP
authentication. I guess this explains why some people saw the problem and
some didn't.

They've update their archives in:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp2

Remember to grab the Kernel (crash when accessing floppy or CD-ROM with
virus detection software installed, priority 15 program hang), RAS PPP
dial-out (LCP extensions can't be turned off) and RPC (CPU looping) fixes
(if they're important to you) in:

/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/hotfixes-postSP2

From Microsoft:

Customers have been reporting a problem with corrupted files when running
the Update program from SP2. Microsoft has investigated the problem
and has found that it is related to the way the binaries are packaged
together using authentication for web distribution.

This problem only occurs when customers download SP2, expand it, and copy
the files from one machine with an NTFS partition to another machine over
the network (and only when the two systems negotiate raw write mode between
them).

When the Update program is run from from this second computer, a message
appears after rebooting stating that either NTFS.SYS or ADVAPI32.DLL
was corrupted.

The files that were affected by this problem are the following:

NTFS.SYS
ADVAPI32.DLL
WINHLP32.EXE
HALAPIC.DLL

We have resolved this problem by repackaging the binaries. The binaries
in SP2 have not changed - they have simply been repackaged. The new
self-extracting executables are no longer zipped with the authentication
option.

This *does not* affect the CD-ROM version of the Service Pack.

Therefore:

1) Customers who downloaded SP2 and encountered this file corruption during
the Update process should download the new version of the Service Pack
   and install it.

2) Customers who used the CD-ROM version of SP2 are not affected and
therefore do not need to make the change.
