5454.3Sharing NT Printer on Win95GLRMAI::ogodhcp-125-112-152.ogo.dec.com::PNEILFri Jan 24 1997 08:0520
Hi,

This seemed as good a note as any to put in this question.

So, ...

We have set up a a DEClaser 2250 on an Intel Pentium NT Server and want to
share it with Win95 pc's. From other NT machines we can see the printer
and include it directly from browsing the network. But, from Win95 pc's
we can only include it by entering the path manually
(ie, \\servername\sharename) and supplying our own driver. I am under the
impression it should be possible to share this printer and directly supply
the Win95 printer driver from the NT Server. But, when I try to add an
'Alternate Driver' I get an error message (basically 'cannot do this').

Is what I'm trying possible and if so what procedure should I follow ?

Thanks for any help,

Peter.

re: .3

Just to let anyone who follows know, I worked out the answer.

Since I couldn't do anything thru modifying the properties I deleted the
printer and tried installing it on the NT Server from scratch. During the
Install I specified Windows 95 as an additional client. Since it looked
like this process wasn't capable of working it's way thru the .CAB files on
the Windows 95 CD I exploded them by hand and pointed the Install process
to the MSPRINT.INF file in the PRECOPY2 subdirectory. From there it gave
me the Windows 95 list of available drivers and all went well after that.

The printer is now visible to and installable directly onto a Win95 client.
Just the way it should be.

You'd think it would have been smart enough to either use Disk 1 from the
diskette kit and figure out which disk came next or do much the same with
the CD kit....

Anyway, all's well now and I learned something, so thanks anyway.

Regards,

Peter.
