3583.9New Performance Information?JALOPY::CARLENCloyce Carlen @Home AloneMon Jun 02 1997 15:0925
Re: .0

Is there new performance information on AlphaServers vs. Intel running
strictly as a Windows NT file and print server. An old document I found
indicates a 4-CPU Prioris performed better than an AlphaServer.

That doesn't give me a competitive advantage against ComPac.

I'll repeat the same comment at Pete:

    The AlphaServer xxx is x% better (throughput) for 1000 clients that an
    Intel Pxxx.

The customer I will be meeting with is only interested in Windows NT
file and print serving for now.

I'm assuming that I cannot share Chris' Spread sheet configurator with
the customer -- anything new since 1995?

I have a few days before the meeting.

Thanks,

Cloyce

	I doubt that Alpha will perform better than Intel for print and file
  serving. Print and file serving is basically an I/O and not a CPU intensive
  task, so the issues are the peripherals rather than the CPU. Most important
  here is the disk controller, especially if the files are small.

Here's a concept you probably haven't considered: (put in check the
Alpha ego for a moment) Sell the customer the server that has the best
file/print server performance, best price/performance, and costs less than
COMPAQ: a DIGITAL Prioris Server.

3583.12... don't forget service as competitive advantageMPOS01::naiad.mpo.dec.com::cerlingI'[email protected]Tue Jun 03 1997 11:5410

	In addition to quoting our excellent Intel products, you can also use
	our excellent service organization as a competitive advantage. (Yes,
	we also service Compaq systems, but it does require more paperwork
	than the contract for our systems.)

3583.13Thanks for the Information!JALOPY::CARLENCloyce Carlen @Home AloneWed Jun 04 1997 07:1921
Thanks for all of the good information. One would have thought that
along with a super speedy Alpha chip that DIGITAL would have developed
the total system to take advantage of this speed and power.

I will pass this information along to the AVNET Sales Rep. If any of
you could give us pointers to whitepapers and other customer sharable
documents that prove a DIGITAL Intel Prioris Server is better than
Compaq, Dell, IBM, etc. that would be a big help. We'll do our best to
win!

Tim, In this area Digital Service is becoming a myth - only because the
few remaining Field Service Engineers are running days behind in
DECservice calls and that puts Intel boxes way down the list for
service. On top of that some MCS BOZO closed the carry-in service to
further upset customers. More paper work to service Compaq's... bet
you can guess how the boys would respond to that!

Again thanks for the info.

Regards.

	Sorry to hear that. I guess I must be spoiled here in the Twin Cities.
	We have an excellent MCS organization. I regularly hear kudos from
	our customers about the great job they do. We have people who focus
	on the small systems, so they get the same level of attention (as is
	defined in the contract) as the large systems.
