| I really don't understand the base note. Is that a statement?
a question? a complaint? What is expected from that one line sentence?
Please explain.

| Activity in this conference seems to go in cycles, though over the past
few years there has been a lot less of this sort of noting than previously.

| This is just a total out and out guess... so please don't jump on me...
but maybe most of the people who spent a lot of time reading/writing
non-work related conferences got made redundant... or people are afraid
to spend time reading/writing nwrc incase they get made redundant... or
so many people got made redundant noone left has time for nwrc...

| Naaaaah, I think everybody found out about the Usenet, Mosaic, Gopher,
and the World Wide Web, and they're all busy getting Internet addresses
and trying to figure out how to get IP stacks running alongside DECnet
on their PCs.

| Regarding basenote
It's just that I've checked in here a few times and there's nothing new
-- no new replies, no new notes. All of the world's problems have been
solved. Gee, I guess I'm next.

I think it's due to the general, corporate-wide level of discomfort
with the employment situation. If everyone's just a duck in a shooting
gallery, who's going to be the one that "stands out" - perhaps because
"it's clear they wrote all these notes in the H-R conference".
I think the lack of participation is due to people "keeping their
own side of the street clean" in this time of uncertainty. I do not
think it's because the "flunkeys" have been purged.

| I do remember that when the first round of layoffs started, a number of people
made a point of deleting everything they had ever written in employee-interest
notesfiles because they were certain that such participation would make them
more likely to be "tapped".

| Considering some of the note-aholics who are still writing (I shall
leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide whether or not I'm one
of 'em!), it sure doesn't look as if people were getting tapped for
excessive noting... However, I've certainly heard some people say they
were afraid to note in this climate.
Another factor might simply be that the "survivors" are too busy; I
know there's been a lot of attrition, in addition to the cutbacks, and
some groups and projects are understaffed. The remaining people wind up
having to do the jobs of three sometimes, and it doesn't leave much
time or energy for networking.
And then there's the tone... some of the strings (like this one?) take
on a gloomy cast as people bemoan the situation, or say goodbye
(voluntarily or otherwise), and many people seem to find it too
depressing, and quit noting just because they don't want to hear the
latest bad news.
I still dart in when I'm restless, or waiting for a compile or a test
suite to finish, or when I'm just bursting to tell people about
something, but I don't follow as many conferences or spend as much time
in them as I did once upon a time.
FWIW,

| I don't follow that many conferences either, it just takes more time
than I want / have to devote. I think that the notesfile is perhaps
the best thing that happened to Digital (once upon a time), now it's
just another target to justify equipment cutbacks. I would think that
at a time when uncertainty and frustration is at an all time high
(today), people need a way to vent and/or relieve some anger.
I've been mostly a read only noter but have entered a reply when I felt
strongly about a topic or even (forgive me) thought that I could offer
some assistance. I believe that the trend that I'm seeing is that more
and more notes files are becomming dormant, and I think that it's a
shame! I guess I'll starting megabucks on America Online.

Well I don't think your base note was either a statement of strong feelings
nor an offer of assistance, so I don't know what you are asking us, the
noting community to forgive you of.

| Forgive me? yeah you're right. It's just that I would hate to see the
notes file go away due to non-interaction. And with the ever
increasing down/rightsizing going on, I wonder how much longer this
will last.
Reading through the notes gave me a different perspective on my
problems. Reading through most notes files gave me the indication that
most of the people who were most vocal are also the ones who seem to be
leaving. Is it because they seem to have more time on their hands or
because they make the most use of the time given to them? Could it be
because they are just more vocal? I don't know.
The base note is not a statement of strong feelings, but I do feel
strongly about it. Isn't the title somewhat scarcastic?
I really believe that once Digital hits bottom and starts the rise, we
will be an unstoppable corporation. I just want to be around to help
us along. Seeing the notes file wither away is not something that
would enjoy.

as long as I'm around (and I expect that to be a while.)
