| On 20/20 or 60 Minutes, or one of those, a gang member said kids
join gangs for protection. If you don't belong to a gang, you're
fair game for anyone. If you wear colors, an assault on your person
is considered an assault on the whole gang you belong to.

| Also I've read / heard / seen in the news that kids join gangs for
acceptance - something that they don't get at home. Pre teens and
teenagers want the same thing that we "adults" want - aceptance and the
need to feel that we belong, the need to feel needed, love and respect.
I have a nephew that wants to join a gang because he complains that his
mother (my ex sister-in-law), doesn't respect him. He is required to
do *all* of the house work while she lays around.
He lives about 450 miles away from me but I trying to stay into his
life. We'll see...
