709.1Why not ask?APEHUB::RONFri Mar 10 1989 12:537
Yes, I expect everyone has 'one of these days' once in a while. When
it happens, I say something like "I wish I knew what I can do to
help". People often tell me.

709.2MACHO IS DEAD!!! YEA!!!NYEM1::COHENaka JayCee...I LOVE the METS & #8!Tue Mar 14 1989 08:3510
    My first observation after reading this is how nice it is that the
    guys are responding.....i guess that image of the macho-type is
    finally being laid to rest...thanks guys!

    I usually ask someone who is in need of some cheering up "what can
    I do to make you feel better?" That seems to get most people talking
    about what it is that's bothering them...

    	I agree with .1 and .2 - but ... quite often, the hurting person
    does not know what you or anyone else can do to help.

    	If the offer to help is made, and the response is "I don't know"
    one may help simply by letting the hurting person know that he/she
    is willing to help when and if possible.

    	Sometimes, just knowing that someone cares and is willing to
    help can make a big difference.

    	When I first truned to this conference, I was looking for help,
    but I really didn't know in what form, or what to expect - but the
    supportive responses while they couldn't affect a "cure" went such
    a long way to helping me feel better.

    	If you are in touch with your spirituality, you may also Pray
    for the hurting person - when one believes in it, it works.
