By the way, I seem to remember somebody who organized a 'fun' jam for
some DEC musicians that came off really well but who got seriously
angry because the drummer for HIS band got drunk before they went
on stage. So it's all subjective.

| I am curious about one thing, Rik. You said you lightened up on
patriotism to the point where it means nothing to you. Do I understand
correctly that you don't care if you were a U.S. citizen or a citizen
of another country? I am not judging, just curious.

| Religion:
My entire concept of "God" has changed over the years. I am at
the point where I feel that an unlimited "mind" in "poured" into
a limited body, plunked down in the middle of a society where it
is taught what is good/evil by other "contained" minds, coerced
by peers and other members of the same and different societies until
it "conforms" to what is "right". This same person is taught that
they "should" feel guilty if they don't believe a certain way, follow
a certain path, or try to discover for themselves exactly what "God"
is/isn't. This no longer fits what I have learned through my lifetime;
therefore, I have removed myself from any affiliation with religous
organizations, labeling myself Christian, Jew, Buddist, etc., "prayer"
as most people pray, etc. I simply am the best "me" I can be always
looking to improve and grow as a person. I do what I can for others,
offer friendship and support, and focus on being a decent human
being. By doing so, I have gained a freedom that many others have
not yet discovered. It also makes me happy.

Tell you the truth, I wish I could lighten up more about a lot
of things. It's like a lot of advice, well intentioned and easy to
give but sometimes hard to implement personally.

P.s. RE: .4 I enjoyed your note Barb.

669.8 | Lightening up is hard to do | RETORT::RON | | Wed Feb 01 1989 16:19 | 100 |

What did I mean when I said "lighten up"?
I meant, take criticism with a bag of salt and a sense of humour;
listen first, flare up later (even then - only if you really must);
do not find an insult where none is intended. In other words: don't
take yourself too seriously, lighten up.
Now, I disagree with almost everything I see in the base note. All
items the author takes lightly, I view very seriously; and what he
views as significant... you know what I mean.
Marriage:
Sorry, can't take it lightly. I am married to my best friend, my
life companion. She is very important to me, I take her very
seriously. I am quite willing to sacrifice a lot of myself for her.
I would do my utmost to make her happy. She does her best to make
me happy.
But: "Ya gotta get married" - nobody said so.
"Ya gotta stay married" - only if it makes you happy.
"Ya gotta have kids!..." - only if you want them.
"Divorce is bad! ...divorce is failure!..." - what can I
tell you? If two people started out to create a beautiful,
wonderful relationship and eventually ended in divorce,
then, yea, they failed.
"Divorce is pity and sorrow..." - I wouldn't know, but based
on what I read in this file, it sure is.
Job:
> "I know so many people that are very heavy indeed on their
> jobs!"
Well, I can relate to that. Work is very important to people. Not
because "the whole world will just fall apart" without it, but
because of the satisfaction **they** derive from it.
All significant achievements of mankind were brought about by
workaholics. Authors, inventors, composers, scientists - all put
their body and soul into their work. From Chopin to Madam Curie,
from Balzak to Einstein.
No great achievements ever came forth from the 9 to 5 crowd.
Patriotism:
> "you should be proud to be an american" ... heavy stuff!
You were born into it, and the freedom that goes along with it gives
you the right to belittle it. Others have made a conscious CHOICE to
be Americans, after much internal debate and tribulations. Try to
view the topic from their point of view and you may gain some
insight into your own.
> i don't believe in patriotism at all....to me it's just
> another form of control being exercised by *the system*...
> so i lightened up on it....in fact...it carries no weight at
> all...
I wish I could comprehend how can one take oneself so seriously, yet
take one's nation so lightly. Please try to explain, I really do
want to understand.
vows/responsibilities:
> you made a vow!...it's your responsibility! you promised!...
>
> i dont' make many promises... i make even less vows...
>
> i'll give it a shot if i want to or if i have to.....
> but if it fails...oh well....
Not making commitments - I understand. Once I commit, I cannot take
it lightly. I realize your attitude is more restful.
> i'd really like to hear what you people think are areas
> where you have lightened up and areas where you are heavy...
That's easy. Just look at what you belittle and you'll know what
**I** take seriously. And vice versa.
> i promise not to judge these...
Oh, lighten up. Judge all you want. (Caution: This is in jest. Do
NOT take offense).

re: .8
i'm happy if you're happy.
look ron, if that's how you want to live....
enjoy!
but i choose to live differently.....!
i like it!
it's relaxing....calm....
it feels good!
you want to worry about all those nasty things?
have fun....
i don't want to...
and have, in 37 years, found ways to "lighten up" on those
issues.....
as i look around me, at me friends, the people i work with...
and see how heavy they get, the burdens, the anxiety, the depression
over issues that i just don't accept the import of....
and they look at me and say (they do say this)...
"rik...you're always in such a good mood!...you're always so
positive!...doesn't this stuff get to you"
(yeah...it gets to me...but i work hard at putting it into a
perspective keeps me happy....i don't need no shrink!)
i don't wnata change...
ron, ole buddy...you can have my share of the grief....
it's all yours!
no charge!
