| I think that you are being hit by the growth of the company. As
groups grow, they need more space. It would probably be inefficient
to allocate all of the needed space to a group. For one, how much
growth and for how long would you allocate into the formula.
6 or 7 times is about what I have done in the last 5 years. It
does get to be a drag. But look at the good side. At least you
get the area cleaned out of any unnecessary items (hopefully) with
each move.

years I've been here, I've only had to change buildings once.

| I've been thru so many moves since I started working for DEC that
I have lost count. My last move was one that I have to say
was a total waste of my time, the movers time and DEC's money.
I moved across the Isle! The time before that I moved 15 feet so
it was justified.#^)
What I hate about moving is that it always takes me about a week
to get all my s#%$ back in order where I can find it in a hurry.

2'nd floor. The remaining 3/4's were empty.
a new group was coming into the building and needed
@1/4 of a floor. did they take part of the 3/4's that was empty?
nope. they wanted the 1/4 that was in use by my friends group...
negotiations got under way....
my friends group was told to move....
they did....
and the new group coming into the building....
never came to the building....they went some place else...

| Hi,
Talk to Charlie Hine.
He has moved in one (1) year the number of times you have moved
since coming to DEC.
Happy "Mov'n" New Year!

I would think that all this unnecessary movement is highly expensive
to the company, (not to mention extremely disruptive to those affected
by this moving around).
In a time when the corporation is saying that DEC needs to tighten
its company belt in the form of restricted upward, or even lateral,
movement, less than cost-of-living pay raises etc, one has to wonder
if things like this "musical cubicles" game is one of the reasons
behind such problems.

| Moving groups to and fro is a write-off for the company. In the
immediate sense, it costs the company a golden penny or two, but
the company gets a break at tax-time.

| We may get a break at tax time, but I would question what it costs
us beyond money. What about the sense of lack of control. What
about the frustration. What about the lost productivity.
I would submit that what we gain at tax time time is more than offset
by these other less tangible items.

talk about moves...I've been here 11 months....Or entire
group changed offices in October....at this time they also
laid temporary wiring for more power into the area.
now we are having to pack up again, so they can move
everything out of our offices so that they can change the
wiring to a permanent power upgrade...then they'll move all
our stuff back into our offices...
anyone else had to "move" to their same office?

When I go in on Monday, my office will have moved. It took almost a day to
pack - I had to unload my entire horizontal file cabinet - it's going to take
probably that same time to unpack. sigh ...

| I'm about to move into my 11th cube in 5 1/3 years. In one 8
month period I had 4 different cubes in another facility where
I was working temporarily (in addition to the 11 above).
Fortunately the last two moves have been within the same floor
of the same building and to unoccupied cubicles. By moving myself
I was able to avoid packing 80+ boxes!

| DECmove update:
Over the holidays, our whole group relocated into a building with
an awsome view of the Rockies as well as the plains (you pick the
view). Things actually worked at the first power up.
I guess some moves are worth it. When we finally get into our
final home on the 4th floor of KDT, we are promised a "permanent"
home. (Mind if I am a doubting Thomas?)
We are also promised a hand in the design of the cubicals. The
"temporary" space is made of paper thin panels so if the next
cube's phone rings, (actually, it beeps since we have the
electronic phones), you'd think it's your phone beeping. I solved
the problem with a ringer from Radio Shack.
Now, we have a CUBE WITH A VIEW.
