529.0. "Testimonial from a "read-only" noter" by QUARK::LIONEL (We all live in a yellow subroutine) Tue Jun 21 1988 17:56

Steve,

I've been an avid reader of HUMAN_RELATIONS since its creation and
I've found a lot of wonderful things in the conference.

I'd been meaning to write a sort of "testimonial" saying how helpful it had been
to me to read some of the things posted in the conference and have that posted
anonymously in there but I never quite got around to it (my life has been
understandably hectic lately :-)).

I'm generally a "read-only" noter in the conferences I follow and I thought it
would be nice to let people know that there is a silent audience that often
benefits from the notes that are written (often these are the notes that it must
take a lot of courage to write and post in public conference).

Feel free to post the above in HUMAN_RELATIONS if you think it'd be of
interest.

529.1Beyond ValueELESYS::JASNIEWSKII know from just bein' aroundWed Jun 22 1988 12:1913

As an argument against changing or deleting conferences, I've
maintained that some are *beyond measureable value*, because they
can have such an impact on people, in terms of realization. The
value of people - in this case Digital employees - is also beyond
measure. Comparing a concept like "cost of support" of a conference
to even *one* person being able to change their life for the better
as a result of it's existance, is nonsense.
The testimonial in .0 further shows that we have no measure
of the extent of these benefits.

Reading .0 reminded me how much I also have gotten out of this
conference and how much I like it. One benefit that I can immediately
recall is that the replies in the note on turnoffs on people's
feelings about smoking helped me when I quit smoking two years ago
    this September.

I've also met people from this file who have gone on to become
    good friends.

I too agree with .0 as to the value of this conference and all the
conferences included in notes. Even though I do not add my comments
all that often, I do come in here and read alot of the topics.
Some have particular interest to me, so in listening to other opinions
and solutions to many of life's ups and downs I can broaden my way
of thinking. There is alot of knowledge to be gained and shared.

Here's to the silent participants in this conference, I being
    one of them.
