I'm looking for information regarding volunteer work. Recently I moved to Acton and had to give up my volunteer job with Mass. Association of the Blind. I contacted this area's office but there does not appear to be any clients in this area. (I'm sure there are they are just unknown.) If anyone has knowledge of any organizations looking for volunteers, I am interested. I would need the organizations name, what they do, and a contact name and/or phone number. Since I work days my time is restricted to evenings. I would also like it to be within the Acton area. I am willing to travel but not for a great distance. Thanks in advance Suzanne

Jesse, I called the Brookline office as well as the Worcester Office. They said that they do not have any clients in this area. Sounds strange to me but then maybe the people in this area are not aware of or don't need what MAB can offer. That is why I would like to see if there is anything else in the area that maybe I would be interested in. Your support group sounds good. I wasn't aware of anything like that. Sue | |||||

The Leominster MAB office (537-1514) has had a notice in all the local papers for the past two or three years requesting volunteers. Leominster is 8-12 miles west of Acton. Also, United Way publishes an annual book that lists Mass Agencies that are in need of volunteers. Most local libraries received a copy. The Fitchburg Public Library -- a Great! library by the way -- keeps its copy in the pamphlet file. Any reference librarian will get it for you or show you were it is kept. Hmmm, also WRKO radio station ran a pub service ad last week saying that a Boston association for the blind is looking for readers who will come into a radio station (not WRKO) and record stuff. The WRKO public relations office could probably tell you who was in need. (Paul Bensaquin -sp? was the announcer who recorded the service announcement.) Meigs |
