440.1 | A Fable On Relatives | PSYCHE::WILSON | Degas | Mon Dec 14 1987 14:44 | 11 |
| One of Aesop's fables goes like this:
Socrates was building a very tiny home for himself. One of the
citizens of Athens laughed at him, mocking him for his small house
and his lack of relatives.
Socrates answered, ``It is small, yet my only hope that I have enough
true friends to fill it.''

| I think the best (worst?) was one time I came home from work, found
my brother in my apartment, helping himself to the contents of the
refrigerator. He had picked the lock on the front door to get in.
He had something to discuss with me, and had "gotten hungry", so
this is what he did.

| Re .3
Speaking of cleaning up, I have an aunt and uncle who used to come
and visit and "clean up". I mean, they would clean and/or fix anything
that looked like it needed it (to them). This was in some ways
nice (we used to joke about when the "Cleaning Crew" were going
to come visit), but they would usually break something - one glass
out of a fancy light fixture, lose the faucet strainer out of a
faucet that was at least 50 years old (try to find a new one!),
accidentally push a mop handle through a window, etc.

440.5 | My relatives | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | | Tue Dec 15 1987 14:17 | 19 |
| My father (deceased, unfortuneately) was always a very welcome visitor
in my book - always wanted to know what things he could help with
around the house, and would very happily tinker away during his
visit, replacing the rotting molding around the back door, adding
electrical wiring in the basement (he was both a licensed electrician
and a professor of electrical engineering - a funny combination
which he was very proud of - he claimed it showed he was both practical
and theoretical!), etc. -- just as he did in his own home. The
house benefitted as much from his visits as its occupants did, and
he had fun, too.
My brother (much as I love him) is not such a welcome visitor: he
takes the world's longest showers (in our single bathroom), using
up both the hot water and the bath soap at a truly amazing rate
(I don't know anyone else who can melt away an entire large bar
of bath soap in a week - I don't know how he does it! He CLAIMS
he doesn't eat it...).
I guess no one is foolish enough to REALLY impose on us!

| re: .0
It seems that there are two kinds of relatives.
Those that impose on the others
and
Those that let them !
If I do it, then I'm crass ...
If I let them do it ...........

| friends are chosen..relatives are not.
The best part about having both is friends will say to our imposing
relatives the things we will not!
