409.0. "Where have all the old Noters gone?" by YODA::BARANSKI (Law?!? Hell! Give me *Justice*!) Mon Oct 05 1987 13:38

Where have all the old Noters gone?

Do people grow through reading notes? Do they eventually grow beyond notes?
What's beyond notes? Personal (in the flesh) relationships?

Do people get sick of notes? Tired of subjecting themselves to yammering
idiot's keyboards? Tired of holding down the fort (or up, in the case of the
'enlightened') against the heathens?

I've seen several old noters notes change temperment for the worse, and then die
out, and I wonder... what will happen to that old noter who graced me with their
thoughts?

Or do old noters just leave DEC, and the Nirvana of Notes?

Jim, about to have a mid NOTES crisis :-)

They turn into moderators, discover how much time that takes, suffer
moderator burn-out, get cranky, bitchy, sanctimonious, and unpleasant.
Eventually they quit trying to please all of the people (and DEC)
all of the time, drop out and get real jobs. ;-) (or start doing
    the one they've got).

Well, I don't know where all the old noters go, but I do know that
those of us who took on the job of moderating some conferences haven't
much time to write notes, because we're usually working on some
other aspect of notes, like avoiding trouble and trying to soothe
all those ruffled feathers you all seem to get. And that definitely
leads to burn-out and major disillusion (dissolution?) in a lot
of cases. Sigh. It was so quiet back in the "good old days" ;-)
when noters numbered in the hundreds rather than in the thousands.

We are here, but in my case, have gotten extremely busy, or started
dating someone so evenings are all taken, (or maybe both :-)...), or
just in a lull where we are reading only, while new ideas state all
issues :-), or as Jim says, at times we get tired of holding down
    the fort...

PS. It seems that the more time goes by, we have new folks
saying the same old things/discussing the same old topics, and
with the newer attitudes to Notes as a potentially dangerous
medium after the demise of Sex(c)etera, a lot of the humour and
relaxed friendliness seems to have disappeared....

Too much outside_of_dec activities. Seems like we had more "fun"

Well, personally, I've noticed that some of the members (new and
old) seem to use this conference during normal working hours. I
remember one chap who explained that his manager gave approval for
him to use the conference practically anytime he wanted to during
the day. That's fine I suppose, but even if I were given such
permission, I would certainly use such "working hours time" with
much discression. After all, we are not paid to be psychologists.
(My apologies to the extreme few that are employed as such at DEC.)

Sure, it sounds like I'm slightly off topic, but my point is that
possibly a lot of people who used to be old noters recognized that
they had real jobs and couldn't (or rather, shouldn't) use company
time to exploit their feelings on such contravertial issues as
"What do you like on your hamburger?".

Yes, I know that in most cases the above is an exaggeration, I under-
stand how helpful this conference can be at times. Goodness knows,
I've used it enough times to let out my own feelings and harried
emotions. As well, there are lots of reasons why someone might
write or read this conference during working hours. Such as:
using it during lunch time, or a well deserved break in the morning
or afternoon just to break up the monotony of our normal work days.

I DO enjoy this conference, however, I happen to be fortunate to
have a terminal at home occassionally, and use it after-hours to
log into this conference. Admittedly, there was a time when I used
to use this conference during working hours, but I found I got behind
in real work, and ended up taking some of it home just to get it
completed on schedule. (I'm glad those days are gone!).
Maybe some of the old noters feel the way I do, and are not as
fortunate to have a terminal at home. Perhaps ?

Perhaps they have better things to do ?!?

I like .11's explanation, although I'm not an "old noter" :')
With such *interesting* topics like "leaving the seat up" or "is
MAX HEADROOM a DEADHEAD?" people probably just say "I've got more
    serious things to consider"...

    re: .0

Jim - ALL the above. Noters, like the proverbial mustard seed, will
do whatever seems right for them to do. Some, like a chameleon,
change with whjatever color they happen to be on; some try very
hard to use others experiences as a 'spring board' to leap up
to a higher level of "knowledge", "sensitivity", "awareness", "whatever
you hold dearest in the cockels of your heart".

For some older ones (I guess I'm now one of the older ones, since
some of the much older ones have become read mostly) - the topics
are like Haleys Comet -- after a while they repeat, and it gets
tiresome to write repeatments of previous topics

So I find myself ignoring many topisc now, not because of lack of
interest, but because i've 'written to' that topisc long ago, and
maybe several times (thats where its nice to have archives to look
back into, to see how we may have changed over time).

Its been a sprt of pleasurable fun to watch someone new come in,
open up a topic from curiosity or even pain; and then observe that
persons veiwpoint become altered as they change from what they now
are, to the person they'd like to become (and do eventually). Even
as I write this, there will be a few who'l read this, nod thier
head and say 'Uh huh', and others who'll think (BS Early).

Its kinda nice to have a 'silent' partner in lifes game, and its
just as nice to have a not so silent partner at home. Sort like
an 'unlicensed' counselor at the fingertips. (Also sort of like
an unwanted 2nd conscience, too........ as anyone who's been
    'woobied' knows :^) ......)

Another old noter speaks:

Well I was around for the first Friends Notes file and the old WRU... and
need we even mention the Older versions of Soapbox and gulp...SEXetera!

But things do change.. old subjects get talked to death.. and it is time
to let the new blood take over.

Of course in the "old days" when I did the majority of my noting I had a
terminal at home, my social life was pretty much the net and noter's parties
(much as I hate to admit it now) and I did not have Richard and the wonderful
home life I have now. Now in the evenings there is barely time for eachother
and the last thought on my mind is logging in to find out what is going down
in the wonderful world of notes!

I think also that any lasting relationships formed via notes have been continued
in mail and via the telephone so notes is not the only way of keeping abreast
now.

I think like all things notes change, the people that do the majority of noting
change and the change takes over and points us in new directions...

Old noters ?? well in my case, after only about a year (not so
old), I read the notes and think "gee... what an interesting topic"
so I go along, reading the replies to see if someone else said what
I'm thinking.. and the subject turns.. then noters start in on
each other (well you said this about that and I'm P.O.'d about some
such trivial thing... and on..).... so I think to myself "I don't
want any part of this" and go on to the next unseen (which is now
approxamately 1 year behind). I would have loved to contribute
to some of the 'older' notes...
then of course there is the time thing
    and the redundant part
and the 'other things to do' delemma (sp?)

I still read my favorite conferences, but I, too, have a lot less time to
write these days, now that I'm no longer "single".

It's also a lot harder to "reply" when you're reading batch-style. Don't know

Work work and more work... more than person has asked me why it took so
long to respond to requests to join a particular file that I
moderate... I told them that I have a job that DEC pays me to do
and that moderating notes conferences are not in my job description...
it's simply a matter of how much free time one has. My job keeps
me busy, a lot of the notesfiles are just too darn busy (and sometimes
boring) for a reply to every note (or any note), and my after-hours
life is quite full as well... old noters don't die... they're just
